Is THE SCORCHED #24 Good?
With the end of Jessica Priest’s service to Gaia comes a time of new beginnings and the arrival of a new (old?) threat in THE SCORCHED #24. This time, John Layman and Todd McFarlane introduce a villain with ties to Medieval and Vindicator to give Jessica’s renewed team a run for its money.
When last we left Jessica Priest, aka She-Spawn, she relinquished the influential connection to Gaia, and Spawn offered her the option of reassuming the role as leader of the Scorched. Now, Julia meets with Medieval and Redeemer to affirm her commitment to leading the team on her terms when a monster from Sir John’s past in England comes for blood.
If you’re wondering where Scorched sits within the context of the Heaven/Hell War and the race to stop Sinn from claiming Hel’s Throne, we don’t know. This issue either sits in an alternate timeline or takes place before the war, so it’s unclear how the same characters appearing in multiple issues jive with a major crossover event.
What’s great about THE SCORCHED #24? Layman and McFarlane’s introduction of a new villain, the Viscerator, is well done, adds flavor to Medieval’s often-overlooked background, and sets up a worthy opponent to reinvigorate the Scorched as a cohesive team. You get a lot of meat in this issue.
What’s not so great about THE SCORCHED #24? Honestly, this issue is rock-solid and ticks all the right storytelling boxes. The disconnect between the events of this issue and the ongoing Heaven/Hell War is confusing, but you wouldn’t know about that issue unless you’re reading the other Spawn titles.
How’s the art? Stephen Segovia is delivering some of the best work of his career in this issue. The lines are clean and strong, Segovia’s action choreography is energetic, and the dramatic moments hit hard.

Check out our The Scorched #23 review to find out how Jessica and Al parted ways.
We begin with a man named Bishop leading heavily armed soldiers through the catacombs of an abandoned church in York. When the team reaches the innermost chamber, Bishop’s soldiers are instantly decapitated by a dark force. Bishop pleads for mercy with an offer – he will free the dark force in exchange for a favor.
Elsewhere, Jessica Priest rides her motorcycle to a biker bar in the middle of nowhere to meet Medieval and Redeemer in civilian garb. She explains her plan to reassume leadership with just Redeemer and Medieval as the core, and she asks for their commitment.
We conclude the issue with bullies sent packing, a deadly commotion, and a re-introduction.

Final Thoughts

THE SCORCHED #24 is a rock-solid introduction to the latest Spawn-verse villain with moody art, hard-hitting action, and a purposeful story. Layman and McFarlane have built a team that’s interesting enough to stand on its own without Spawn, and the art is some of Segovia’s best.
