Analysis of THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #11:

First Impressions:

Guts, glory, mysticism, fantastical creatures, and high adventure. Titan does it again with another Conan anthology that will make Robert E. Howard fans weep with joy.

Plot Analysis:

Tattered Wings

Conan and his band of mercenaries accept a mission to recover the kidnapped son of a wealthy lord. When the band of rescuers encounters swift death in the mountains, Conan finds himself alone and at the intersection of parallel worlds, bargains are struck, oaths broken, and worlds collide in Conan’s quest to unravel the truth of a missing boy.

Liam Sharps’s mind-bending adventure leans into the concept of overlapping worlds for an adventure filled with mystery, secrets, and a resolution that only Conan can achieve with his mighty sword. Some readers may find the mind-bending aspects of overlapping realities a bit convoluted, but on the whole, the story is a winner. Plus, Sharp deserves double praise for jaw-droppingly gorgeous art.

Wolves & Witches

Cormac Mac Art, another of Robert E. Howard’s warrior creations, finds himself fighting for his life and the life of his captain when their ship crashes on the rocks of a lonely island during a vicious storm. Cormac drags his captain, Hulhere, to the sight of a lonely cabin atop a cliff where an old hag resides in solitude. The hag offers to heal Wulhere’s wounds, but the price for service is a fight to the death.

At first, Cormac refuses, but his choice turns to mandate when the hag turns into a fanged demon, looking for her next meal.

Ron Marz gives a seldom-used Howard character and gives him a fighting adventure with enough drama and mysticism to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Dany Earls’s demon design is a treat to behold; just vicious enough to make the fight believable. That said, the “did it happen or was it a dream” trope robs the ending of the satisfaction factor.

Positives

As anthologies go, Titan has yet to publish a Savage Sword of Conan issue that falls short. You’ll get your money’s worth with Conan (or Conan-adjacent adventure that would make Robert E. Howard proud.

Negatives

For each tale of woe, there are minor nitpicks. Sharp’s overlapping multiverse concept gets bogged down in confusion when the “how” is explained, and Marz’s Cormac tale doesn’t quite stick the landing. However, the positives outweigh the minor negatives.
