Is THE SACRIFICERS #5 Good?

Oh, my. In THE SACRIFICERS #5, Rick Remender continues the fantasy tale of beasts and gods by sending King Rokos’s daughter on a defiant mission of curiosity, but you know what they say about curiosity and cats.

When last we left this tragic tale of faith and woe, the Princess witnessed what happened to the Quorum of Gods when they drank the Foreman’s specially prepared elixir. After King Rokos thanked the assembly for a year’s worth of prosperity, the Foreman left in haste with an air of disappointment. Now, the Princess follows the Foreman to his workshop to learn the secret of the elixir, the source of the Foreman’s growing resentment towards the Quorum, and the lengths the Foreman will go to for satisfaction.

We constantly (obnoxiously?) harp on the notion that every comic, no matter if it’s a one-shot or part of an ongoing, must have at least one big idea. After years of reading and reviewing comics, it’s now uncommon to see a writer build up and pay off a plot development with serious consequences, but Remender delivers one big idea that’s a wow moment, turning up the drama in a big way.

What’s great about THE SACRIFICERS #5? In a nutshell, Remender puts readers on a path early that implies the Princess is in over her head, and instead of shying away or pulling back, Remender takes a big swing in the plot that pays off.

What’s not so great about THE SACRIFICERS #5? There’s little to critique in THE SACRIFICERS #5 that’s worth mentioning. If you’re into thought-provoking drama that packs a punch, this issue is as good as it gets.

How’s the art? Max Fiumara’s panel layouts and composition are the standout in this issue. Fiumara makes excellent use of off-angle closeups, especially on characters’ eyes, to maximize the impact of the moment.

Check out our THE SACRIFICERS #4 review to find out what happened to the Quorum of Gods when they drank the Foreman’s elixir.

We begin with Foreman returning to his laboratory and his beloved, Joy. The Foreman is frustrated by the Harvest Festival because he’s not receiving the credit and rewards promised by King Rokos in exchange for creating the elixir that grants the Quorum of Gods their immortality.

Suddenly, the Princess arrives, demanding to know how the Foreman creates the elixir that grants longevity and power to her father. Despite the risk to his life, the Foreman orders his guards to capture the Princess. We conclude the issue with curiosity questions asked, questions answered, and blacking out.

THE SACRIFICERS #5 delivers a knockout punch of an issue when the Princess learns the secret of the Foreman’s elixir. Remender builds momentum throughout the fast-paced issue with an unforgettable ending, and Fiumara’s art is fantastic.
