Is THE SACRIFICERS #3 Good?

C’mon. You didn’t really think this was going to end well for Pigeon, did you? Rick Remender uses THE SACRIFICERS #3 as a perfect opportunity to make you feel all warm and fuzzy about the Harvest Gala when the Sacrificers truly are having the time of their lives until Remender pulls the rug out in a shocking turn.

Remender’s script looks at the every-20-year Harvest Gala from two points of view. First, readers are shown the assortment of celestial beings that attend the Gala, with all their scheming intentions and unsavory gossip. Second, we see the Sacrificers run, eat, and play in practical paradise as a warmup to their participation in the Gala. The convergence of the two perspectives isn’t really surprising but it’s still shocking.

We’re not going to spoil what happens, but if you’ve been reading along, you’ve probably got a pretty good idea. The comic isn’t called The Sacrificers for no reason.

What’s great about THE SACRIFICERS #3? Remender is killing it with the nail-biting, inescapable sense of building dread as you wait for the bad thing to happen that may or may not ever come. Every innocent movement looks suspicious. Every innocuous word sounds nefarious. The paranoid tension is off the charts, and you can’t look away.

What’s not so great about THE SACRIFICERS #3? Nothing. This is a Class-A comic from front to back.

How’s the art? Disturbing. Fiumara and McCaig paint a fanciful picture of joy that slyly hides an undercurrent of malignant evil. The slight squint of the eyes and subtle curl of the lips of Rokos’s attendants speak volumes without saying anything at all.

What’s THE SACRIFICERS #3 About?

Check out our THE SACRIFICERS #2 review to learn about Pigeon’s difficult trek to his last stop.

We begin with a cavalcade of entrances as each invited guest enters Rokos’s Harvest Gala. Each attendee puts on an air of grace and civility while privately mocking and belittling their rivals. Rokos accepts that animosity and tension keep the attendees squabbling with each other instead of joining forces against him, so he allows the drama… from a distance.

Meanwhile, Pigeon enjoys his best life as the Sacrificers’ home is filled with games, food, merriment, and fun. Pigeon can hardly believe his good fortune when it appears there was never anything to be scared of. When the doors to the Sacrificer’s home open, a group of singing attendants arrive to welcome a select few Sacrificers to a great feast.

We conclude the issue with singing, primping, and a special glass raised for a toast.

Final Thoughts

THE SACRIFICERS #3 shocks you with a tragic development you hoped would never come. Remender’s script roils with paranoid tension in seemingly harmless moments, and Fiumara’s whimsical art makes the shocking twist heartbreakingly painful.

Score: 9.5/10
