Analysis of THE SACRIFICERS #15:

Recap:

When we last left Soluna in The Sacrificers #14, she frantically held Beatrice back from following the circus performers in the joyful holding area, knowing that death awaits on the other side of the massive doors. Beatrice struggled to trust Soluna because she saw the deadly black spore tendrils that emanated from Soluna’s body every time she fell asleep. Soluna begged Beatrice to stay away from the door and to help Soluna stay awake for as long as possible. Ultimately, exhaustion won out, and Soluna dozed off, but the black spore tendrils tore through the Foreman’s guards instead, giving the Sacrificers an opening to escape.

Plot Analysis:

In The Sacrificers #13, Foreman expresses his love for his partner, knowing that King Rokos has discovered his part in Soluna’s disappearance and will soon come to take revenge. He’s not wrong. Suddenly, a ball of searing fire crashes into the gates outside the Foreman’s gates. King Rokos has arrived to reclaim his daughter from the Foreman’s Sacrificer pens.

At first, Foreman denies any knowledge of Soluna’s presence, but the King will not be deterred. He demands to be taken to the pens. However, the King is shocked when all they find in the pens are decimated bodies. The King, believing his daughter was dead, unleashed an all-consuming flame. At first, the fire destroys the pens and everyone within the area. Then, the flame spreads wider and faster, wiping out villages, forests, and continents.

Soluna runs with the Sacrificers she led to safety, directing them to a cave, which might offer some protection from the world-ending fire. When King Rokos reaches his maximum power, the Cogoks from the world machine break through the ground and swarm the King, encasing him in raw materials to temporarily snuff out his flame. However, the King’s rage is too great to contain, so he breaks out of his prison.

Before the King can reignite the world, he feels his power ebbing. Pigeon and Kronious have arrived to put an end to the King.

First Impressions:

Wow, wow, wow. Rick Remender is on fire (literally) in The Sacrificers #15 when a father’s grief threatens the world, and the only thing that can stop him is someone with equal power and greater grief. If you were hoping for Remender to return to a massive fantasy spectacle, this issue has what you need.

Artwork and Presentation:

Kneel before Max Fiumara. King Rokos’s world-ending campaign of fiery rage is the centerpiece of this issue, and Fiumara does not disappoint. Imagine a large section of the world – not a mountain, valley, or collection of towns, but almost half the planet – roiling in apocalyptic flames. Fiumara’s artwork is mesmerizing.

Story Positives & Negatives:

The Positives:

You might think, “Oh, you like it because of the spectacle,” but that’s only half true. The all-consuming fire is an expression of rage, grief, and, to a certain extent, love when a father loses control over the loss of his daughter. The Sacrificers #15 isn’t just action. The action communicates the dark potential within all of us who love and feel.

The Negatives:

The setup suggest there’s a chance that Soluna and the Sacrificers survive, but it’s unlikely when you see the planetary scale of the destruction. If it turns out Soluna does survive in the next issue, it will be a pill that’s a little too hard to swallow. For now, consider this critique a point of concern rather than an actual flaw.

Final Thoughts:

THE SACRIFICERS #15 sets the world on fire when King Rokos descends from the heavens to exact revenge for his daughter. Rick Remender’s tale of grief spiraling out of control is mesmerizing, and Max Fiumara’s apocalyptic art is jaw-dropping.

Score: 9.5/10
