Analysis of THE SACRIFICERS #14:
Recap:
When we last left Pigeon in The Sacrificers #13, he allowed himself to be captured by Kronious, the god of the world machine. When Pigeon reached his moment of judgment, he unleashed the full fury of his god-power, destroying the world machine, but Pigeon’s words of freedom may have converted Kronious from an enemy to an ally.
Plot Analysis:
The Sacrificers #14 begins with a puppet show inside the Foreman’s “Fun House” where Sacrificers-to-be are lavished with fun, games, food, and joy until their secret harvesting time arrives. When the next group of Sacrificers are joyfully escorted to the inner chamber, Soluna grabs Beatrice and hides behind a cart. She warns Beatrice to never go with the performers.
Beatrice yanks herself away from Soluna because she’s seen the black spore tendrils that pour from Soluna to hurt people. Soluna makes Beatrice promise never to go with the performers, and she tells Beatrice she’ll move a safe distance away. If Beatrice sees Soluna about to fall asleep, she’s to hit Soluna with a rock.
For a time, Soluna stays awake, but hours stretch into days without a solution. Soon, the performers return to escort the next group of Sacrificers. Suddenly, the performers are murdered by the black spore tendrils in gruesome ways when Soluna falls asleep when Beatrice isn’t watching. Armed guards rush in when they hear the commotion and meet the same fate.
The issue concludes with Beatrice throwing a stone with impressive accuracy, Soluna helping the Sacrificers through an unguarded door, and the god of plants and spores giving the king a disturbing report.
First Impressions:
The Sacirifcers #14 is the type of comic that starts off at a moderate pace and then smacks you in the mouth in the second half with mayhem. Rick Remender continually demonstrates he knows how to use this series to blindside readers as soon as they get the slightest bit comfortable, and that’s one of the reasons this is one of our top non-Big 2 comics.
Artwork and Presentation:
Max Fiumara can do no wrong on this series, primarily due to his eclectic mix of bloody violence and whimsical fantasy characters… but for adults. There’s an almost artistic grindhouse quality to Fiumara’s artwork that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else, which greatly elevates and enhances Remender’s vision.

Story Positives & Negatives:
The Positives:
All the basics are in play with Remender’s script, from a character’s journey to the stakes and consequences. What makes The Sacrificers #14 that much better is the violent shift at the midpoint that hits you in your comfort zone, making this issue memorable.
The Negatives:
To be fair, the opening half does come off as a little too relaxed and sedately paced. In fairness, the relaxed tempo could be intentional to lull the reader into a false sense of security, but a step or two up in tension may have helped.
Final Thoughts:

THE SACRIFICERS #14 starts at a soft pace and then wallops you with shocking mayhem for another memorable issue. Rick Remender’s script is a blessed relief from the unimaginative, boring fantasy that floods the Direct Market shelves, and Max Fiumara’s eclectic mix of gory violence and whimsical fantasy is unmatched.
