Analysis of THE SACRIFICERS #12:
First Impressions:
Wow! The Sacrificers #12 brings the series back with righteous anger and screaming fury to unleash death on the oppressors of Harlos. Writer Rick Remender’s tale of woe strikes a rare balance between gripping action and gut-wrenching anguish. This issue continues to affirm why this series is an unquestionable hit.
Plot Analysis:
When last we left Pigeon and Soluna in The Sacrificers #11, Luna’s disappearance and Pigeon’s path of destruction threw the gods into chaos and the natural order of things into chaos. To quell the rising dissent and restore the power of the gods who had already fallen, King Rokos ordered more Sacrificers taken well ahead of schedule.
Unfortunately, Soluna, weakened and close to mortal, was caught up in the next batch of Sacrificers along with Pigeon’s little sister, Beatrice.
In The Sacrificers #12, the gloves come off… literally. The Foreman leads his group of new Sacrificers away for processing in chains. In the woods outside of town, the guards stop the sorry caravan when they hear a strange noise in the darkness of the woods. After moments of silence and muffled screams, the only thing that returns to the Foreman are the severed heads of his guards rolled to his feet.
Rick Remender starts the issue with quiet agitation by suggesting Soluna and Beatrice will meet the same fate as those who went before them. The tension escalates as soon as you realize Soluna’s death would mean nobody is left to warn King Rokos of the Foreman’s intention to overthrow him.
Suddenly, Pigeon leaps through the tree line. Powered beyond measure by Soluna’s fire and wielding an axe of power, Pigeon smashes everything in his path to get to the Foreman. Guards throw themselves in the way to give the Foreman a chance to mount a flying carpet. The Foreman chooses to stay and fight when he realizes Pigeon holds Soluna’s fire, a prize the Foreman originally intended to claim for himself.
What follows is a superpower battle across the land and sky that lays waste to everything within reach. The issue ends with Pigeon sacrificing one for another before he’s claimed by the pits of Hell.
Overall, The Sacrificers #12 is a power-packed issue on multiple levels. Rick Remender’s fantasy tale delivers mega-powered action, deeply painful emotional beats, and a tragic ending with more to come.
Artwork and Presentation:
Max Fiumara returns to the title, and the results look amazing. Fiumara gets to flex superhero-esque muscles with a titanic battle that looks amazing for its sheer spectacle AND boldly communicates the depths of Pigeon’s rage.

The Bigger Picture:
Series Continuity:
The Sacrificers #1 is billed in the solicits as the first of a four-part arc. However, the issue begins almost exactly where The Sacrificers #11 left off, so the first issue in the latest arc will not make for a good jumping-on point. New readers should go back to read the previous issue to get the lay of the land.
