Is It Good?

THE NINJETTES #2 has firmly entered the Lord of the Flies point in the story where the stronger candidates assume leadership, and the weaker candidates fall in line or risk death. Filled with violent, Tarantino-esque action, a sharp wit, and building momentum, this is a solid entry in the series.

The highlight of Van Lente’s script is the steady gelling of characters into their natural packs and the emergence of Steph as the protagonist. We had mixed reactions to the first issue because the sound premise was convoluted by the volume of competing characters. In short, you don’t know who to root for or against for any specific reason. Now, the characters are gelling (and dwindling in number), so the characters are coming into focus, which makes the deaths more meaningful.

Conversely, gelling the characters into the “good ones” and “bad ones” comes with the risk of predictability. If readers have the strong sense that Steph is the hero of this story, the outcome is (almost) assured. In fairness, Van Lente could pull a bait-and-switch as the conclusion draws near, so we shall see.

Cooper’s artwork is very good in this issue. The line work is clean, the action (more swordplay than guns) is gritty, and Kelly’s coloring is excellent.

What’s It About?

Check out our NINJETTES #1 review to find out how the deadly fight for survival began.

We begin with Steph desperately trying to breathe as another candidate chokes her with a garrote. Steph holds to the idea of not wanting to kill anyone, but left with no choice she runs her attacker through with a sword. Despite taking drastic actions, Steph decides to return to the supply building for med kits to save her attacker.

Meanwhile, Ceejay quickly asserts her dominance in the group by taking command. She takes on Kinsley as her second, and the rest of the candidates quickly fall in line. Their first order of business is to flush Steph out of hiding to start eliminating the competition. When they head back to the supply building to look for more weapons and ammo, they find one crate containing clothes sized to fit each candidate and labeled with their names. At the bottom of the crate is a collection of ski masks for each candidate.

We conclude the issue with a fight for medicine, a lesson in a pack mentality, and the most dangerous wolf of all.

Final Thoughts

(Click this link 👇 to order this comic)

THE NINJETTES #2 is a solid entry in the series that rings the surviving candidates into focus and starts moving everyone in the same direction, namely – kill them before they kill you. The pacing, wit, and violence all land beautifully, and the arrival of the trademark Ninjette masks is a welcome addition to the series.

Score: 9/10
