Analysis of THE HEXILES #2:

Plot:

After the group of half-siblings learned each other during their father’s funeral in The Hexiles #1, they opted to go their separate ways rather than submit to their father’s demonic contracts. The issue ended with the first of the seven falling to a demon’s attack. In The Hexiles #2, the remaining six (Romy, Argyle, Madison, Luna, Britton, and Dominic) each receive a package in the mail with a grotesque part of their fallen brother. The message? The demons are coming for them.

Artwork and Presentation:

Joe Bocardo intermixes everyday scenes as each of the siblings goes about their daily lives with horrific demons that spring forth to kill the Kreel offspring. Bocardo uses an engaging editing technique to show the picture within each character’s name to give more emphasis to their identity.

Character Work:

Generally, Cullen Bunn’s character work gives you an idea about each character from their daily habits, style of dress, and surroundings. That said, it’s hard not to see a pervasively emo, depressed quality in all the siblings that give a certain sameness to their personalities.

Pacing:

Bunn’s pacing starts slow but picks up once the packages are delivered and opened, which doesn’t happen until page 12. We’ve dinged Bunn for his plot pacing in the past, particularly in A Legacy Of Violence, so the latter half of this issue gives hope that we won’t see a repeat.

Strongest Point(s):

By far, the highlights of this issue are Boacardo’s art, both in the unique editing and the demonic attacks. Once the traps spring, the issue becomes imminently engaging.

Weakest Point(s):

As noted above, the issue takes a while to pick up speed. Further, the siblings have a similar personality, which doesn’t do much to establish their individual points of view.

Final Thoughts:

THE HEXILES #2 continues the trial of the Kreel siblings when the demonic forces send them a clear, strong message that they can’t escape. Bullen’s script starts slow but picks up speed in the latter half, and Joe Bocardo’s art is splatter-ific.

Score: 7.5/10
