Analysis of THE HERCULOIDS #6:

First Impressions:

This issue of The Herculoids felt surprisingly personal. It dives deep into the emotional side of the big, rock-based creature while still having plenty of action. The story is focused and gets right to the point, which is a nice change of pace.

Plot Analysis:

Dorno discovers what looks like torn pieces of Igloo’s skin and immediately worries that something terrible has happened to his friend. Zandor and Tara quickly arrive on the scene to assess the situation. Zandor explains that this is part of a natural process he has seen before. He tells his son that Igoo is molting, or shedding his old skin so that a new one can grow. Zandor warns them that this leaves Igloo vulnerable and that the planet of Amzot does not suffer the weak.

Igoo is then attacked by horned beasts as his skin is shedding. He manages to hold his own, throwing one of the creatures to the ground and fighting off the others. Suddenly, he is hit by a flash of light, and his mind is pulled into what seems like a buried memory from long ago. He drifts through the memory, remembering a time when he was shedding his old skin and fighting off giant worm-like creatures. He tears one of the worms in half and uses it as a weapon against the others.

After fighting the worms, Igloo encounters small bat-like creatures. He manages to protect a small, white, furry animal from the bats. This shows that even in his weakened state, he is still a powerful protector of the planet’s weaker creatures. He throws a punch at the larger bat creature, and the smaller animal flies away. This adventure is interrupted by another flash of light.

Igoo is now back on Amzot with his new skin and a clear memory. He stands over a creature he had just defeated, and his family and friends are there to greet him. Dorno, Tara, and Zandor are all there to see that their friend is alright. Igoo has returned to his natural, heroic self.

Story

The writing is simple, yet effective. The story quickly establishes a problem, delves into a brief flashback to show a similar historical event, and then resolves the situation without much fuss. It’s a very direct narrative that doesn’t waste any time. The issue feels more like a small chapter than a full story, which might be a problem for some, but it does its job well. The dialogue is straightforward and focuses on moving the plot forward, especially during the flashback. Writer Tom Sniegoski gets the job done without getting in his own way.

Art

The art by Craig Rousseau is bright and dynamic. The characters are expressive, and the action scenes are easy to follow, making the fights feel impactful and exciting. The use of color by Omi Remalante Jr. makes the alien landscape pop and gives the characters a vibrant look.

Characters

This issue is centered on Igoo, and the artist does a great job of showing his vulnerability and strength. The other characters, such as Dorno, are present to support the plot, but they are little more than expository bookends to explain Igoo’s adventure.

Positives

The art is a huge plus here. The visuals are clean, and the colors are striking. The action sequences, particularly Igoo’s fight with the various creatures in his weakened state, are full of energy and movement. The story’s central idea of a character going through a molting process is a creative and unique concept that adds a deeper layer to a classic sci-fi trope. It gives the reader a chance to see a hero in a weakened state without it feeling cheap.

Negatives

The story is over almost as soon as it begins. While it is a fun little adventure, it feels like it could have been a much longer, more fleshed-out plot. The overall narrative is basic, and there isn’t much to it beyond the central conflict and its quick resolution. It lacks the complex character development or surprising twists that would make it more memorable. The flashback, while visually engaging, also feels a little too convenient and doesn’t add as much to the emotional core as it could.

THE HERCULOIDS #6 is a fun and quick read. The art is great, and the story is creative, if a bit simple. It’s a great example of a team getting the job done, but it could have been better. With a little more depth, it would have been a fantastic issue instead of just a good one. Overall, it’s a solid entry that’s worth reading.

Score: 7.5/10
