Analysis of THE HERCULOIDS #3:

Plot:

The Herculoids begin a peaceful day on Amzot when the family of adventurers harvest their crops and send the excess off to trade with neighboring villages. When Zandor arrives at a village for trade, everyone is huddled on top of a windmill because the Mole People have emerged to attack everyone. The attacks spread throughout the neighboring areas.

We learn the Mole People are under the influence of an advanced A.I. program they made contact with while tunneling underground. The machine eventually releases its hold on the Mole People as unsuitable candidates to re-establish its kingdom, but the search continues.

Artwork and Presentation:

Sadly, Craig Rosseau’s art is a weak spot in this issue. There are several panels where details are lacking or outright absent. For example, there’s a panel on a five-panel page that shows Zandor leaping into action, and he has no face. Yes, we want to mimic the low-fidelity animation of the cartoon, but Rosseau’s rush job goes too far.

Character Work:

Tom Sniegoski (re)introduces readers to the Mole People, giving you a quick but clear sense of their underground dominance, their drive to establish an underground kingdom, and their hive-like mentality. Plus, Dorno shows a touch of reckless maturity when he leaps into action with a laser rifle he confiscated from a previous adventure.

Structure:

Tom Sniegoski’s technical structure is solid, but the ending is not as satisfying. The computer simply stops, so the ending reads like a very soft cliffhanger.

Strongest Point(s):

The strongest aspect of this issue is Tom Sniegoski’s spot-on characterization of the Herculoids. They work as a family and a team when threats arise, but they’re equally comfortable living a peaceful life as farmers and people of the land.

Weakest Point(s):

As noted, the weak points are the art from Craig Rosseau, which is too lacking in detail, and the soft resolution, which reads like a weak cliffhanger.

Final Thoughts:

THE HERCULOIDS #3 brings trouble to Amzot when the Mole People come into contact with dangerous and ancient technology. Tom Sniegoski’s voice for the Herculoids is spot-on, and the issue serves as a good starting point for an extended adventure. That said, Craig Rosseau’s low-detail art is sub-par, and the story’s resolution is unsatisfying.

Score: 5.5/10
