Is THE ENFIELD GANG MASSACRE #6 Good?
Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips risk the value of this That Texas Blood spinoff mini-series on the success or failure of THE ENFIELD GANG MASSACRE #6, the finale of this Old West mystery/thriller. Did the risk pay off? Maybe.
When last we left Enfield and Miss Amy, they were the last two survivors of the standoff against the town posse. However, few realized (or believed) that Sheriff Hardesty had discovered Bill Barley’s killer, and it wasn’t Enfield. Now, Amy and Enfield watch the sunrise from adjoining jail cells as they await a trial-less hanging. The ending does and doesn’t turn out the way you think.
If you’ve enjoyed this spinoff mini-series (as we have), you might wonder if the conclusion has the potential for continuation in a follow-up or further adventures of the Enfield Gang. Rest assured, the ending to this issue is very final, so enjoy it for what it is.
What’s great about THE ENFIELD GANG MASSACRE #6? Chris Condon uses the conclusion to pay homage to a famous writer’s well-known short story, giving the ending a poetic twist that literary fans can appreciate. In the back pages, Condon explains the struggle with devising an ending and why he ultimately settled on the one picked. Whether or not the ending chosen is the best is a matter of debate, but you can appreciate the thought process.
What’s not so great about THE ENFIELD GANG MASSACRE #6? Condon made the most of the ending, but it doesn’t quite feel like there was a point based on the outcome. The prevalent result you’re left with is a historical account of a thing that happened, which is not the same as telling a story. Whatever point Condon intended to make, if any, didn’t come through.
How’s the art? Spectacular. Condon’s finale has several moments of joy and anguish that come through a single look or a wail of pain, and Phillips brings it all to life in heartbreaking vibrancy.

We begin with Enfield and Amy watching the sunrise from their adjoining jail cells. Judge Garris and Sheriff Hardesty enter the jail to explain that the two are due to be hanged for Bill Barley’s murder without a trial. The doomed lovers protest, but the Judge explains that reality and the law are not always on the same side.
However, the Judge managed to strike a deal. Only Enfield will hang if Amy agrees to leave the county forever when it’s done. Reluctantly, the couple agree to the terms. Later, Enfield is brought to the gallows, while Amy, hands tied, is forced to watch from a nearby chair.
We conclude the issue with a whip crack, a gunshot, and a closed circle.
