Is THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #2 Good?

David Pepose’s latest entry in the Satanic version of Freaky Friday takes on a new dimension when Satan and Father Vieri come to terms with their respective positions. Still dripping with violence and gore, THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #2 adopts a spirit of grim determination that adds an element of adventure to the horror tale.

When last we left Father Vieri, he awoke from his semi-successful exorcism to learn the Devil had been cast out of Santiago’s body. Unfortunately, the Devil took possession of Father Vieri’s body and put Father Vieri’s soul in Santiago’s body. Now, the Devil returns to Rome and commits multiple acts of sabotage and murder while hiding in plain sight in Father Vieri’s innocent frame. Meanwhile, Father Vieri endures brutal torture by Sr. Izan’s priests as they mistakenly try to exorcise a demon from Santiago’s body.

If the Freaky Friday aspects of the story seem confusing by the description above, it comes across as clear as a bell on the page. Hats off to Justin Birch for using different lettering for each character, so you know who’s who.

What’s great about THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #2? First and foremost, Pepose’s body-swapping concept continues to bear fruit through layer upon layer of tension. You can’t help but sympathize with Father Vieri’s predicament as he endures spectrums of pain. When the tables turn (slightly), you’re firmly rooting for Father Vieri to overcome his predicament.

What’s not so great about THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #2? The Devil does bad things (naturally), but it would help to understand a little more about whether or not he has a plan, what is his plan, and how close or far he is from achieving it. As it is now, the Devil appears to be set on creating chaos because he can, which softens any sense of urgency.

How’s the art? Dark, moody, gory, and bloody. In other words, Alex Cormack is giving horror fans plenty of sticky blood to make gorehounds happy. In fairness, the gore in this issue doesn’t rise to the level of a splatter comic, but you get enough of the red stuff to keep squeamish readers unsettled.

Check out our THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #1 review to find out how Father Vieri got into this mess.

We begin with a group of priests desperately using barbaric means to purge the Devil from Santiago. Father Vieri, now inhabiting Santiago’s body, begs for mercy as he repeats the truth of his circumstance over and over.

Elsewhere, the Devil smiles gleefully when he hears shouts about Cardinal Fortunato’s death by “suicide.” The longer the Devil remains in Rome, the more seeds of chaos he sows, trapping his holy colleagues into service.

We conclude the issue with an act of mercy, a duel, and a call to action.

THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #2 continues the Satanic Freaky Friday tale with the Devil sowing seeds of chaos in Rome while Father Vieri tries to survive when nobody will believe him. Pepose’s writing maintains the horror and adds an element of adventure, while Cormack’s atmospheric art pulls no punches in the gore department.

Score: 8.5/10
