Is THE ACCURSED #2 Good?
The Accursed #2 takes a pause on Olivia and Jeremy’s current (mis)adventure in monster hunting for an issue-long flashback to learn about the Starking family legacy. Jeremy’s role as a support system for his monster-hunting sister takes on generational meaning and a bit of sadness in Mark Fenton’s latest chapter.
When last we left Olivia and Jeremy Starking (we had to look up the solicits to get the names since they’re never named in the first issue), Jeremy sped off in their monster-hunting van to leave Olivia to her frustrating recklessness. Now, we see the source of Jeremy’s frustration goes back to before Olivia’s birth when Jeremy’s parents brought him on missions to quell or kill monsters, starting with an out-of-control Kraken and a multiversal witch.
Jeremy’s story is one of tradition and legacy, but you can’t help but feel bad for the guy. The women in the family are the only ones blessed with power, so the men (first siblings and then husbands) are conscripted to provide logistics and support. It’s a noble calling, but one that leaves little room for choice, a burden Jeremy now feels in spades.
What’s great about THE ACCURSED #2? The mythology and lore surrounding the Starking family get a major boost in this issue. Mark Fenton put young Jeremy and his parents on a wild adventure on the open seas, and bits of dialog and action work together to fill readers in on what’s happening in an interesting way without resorting to walls of exposition.
What’s not so great about THE ACCURSED #2? Overall, THE ACCURSED #2 is a much stronger issue compared to issue #1 because it’s easier to follow what’s happening and establish (part of) the backstory. That said, you do have a few elements that pop up without explanation, such as a time-traveling multiversal witch. No context leads to frustration and confusion every time.
How’s the art? The art’s as good as it gets, particularly for a small publisher. David Camecasse has a caricature art style that’s visually appealing but doesn’t lean too far into exaggerated or cartoonish. Plus, the creature designs look great.

What’s THE ACCURSED #2 About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Check out our THE ACCURSED #1 review to find out why Jeremy stormed away from Olivia.
We begin with a small boat heading out in rough scenes to confront a huge Kraken emerging from the depths. Marilyn Starking is imbued with the power to battle monsters, and she’s determined to calm the Kraken down or kill it. Marilyn’s husband, Joseph, has accepted a life of support to Marilyn’s novel calling, and their son, Jeremy, nervously waits for an outcome where his mother survives.
Marilyn learns the Kraken was disturbed by a time-traveling witch determined to bring monsters into the public light, so Marilyn is forced to fight a battle on two fronts. Suddenly, a giant whale emerges from the depths to soothe the Kraken, while Poseidon (yes, the Poseidon) emerges to put the witch in her place.
We conclude the issue with tossing tides, a family’s legacy explained, and a brother’s duty.
