Is It Good?

SWEETIE: CANDY VIGILANTE #5 may or may not be the penultimate issue in this arc. It’s impossible to tell based on where the story started, how it’s going, and where it’s headed. All we can say for sure is that this issue is almost all exposition and entirely weird.

When last we left Sweetie and her band of vigilante misfits, Pixie got the grand tour where she was introduced to an assortment of new characters, including the lethal German duo of Hansel & Gretel. Now, Pixie completes her initiation and ascension to immortality as the police find bodies left over from Hansel & Gretel’s contract negotiations. The previous mob owner of the Ice Cream Bunny Bar receives news that he’s no longer the owner.

Where’s it all headed? Who knows, and that’s the problem… maybe. The lack of direction and basic plot may be positive or negative, depending on your point of view.

On the plus side, this issue is filled with weird stories by Sweetie and Candy Wolf about the true Ice Cream bunny, but that’s all it is. You get characters in a story telling you a story. If the weird surreality of the characters and setting are enough for you, you’re golden.

However, if you want a comic that has actual plot developments and characters doing more things than standing around talking, this issue is a mess. Truly, the entire issue is characters talking to deliver exposition. Some of the exposition may or may not be relevant to the plot if there even is a plot. In short, SWEETIE: CANDY VIGILANTE #5 is a lot of talking about history, some plot-pertinent facts, and a lot of useless nonsense.

The only saving grace of this issue is Zornow’s art. It’s generally good. Zornow’s character designs are weirdly intriguing, and Fabela’s colors hit the nail on the head for sugary overload.

What’s It About?

Check out our SWEETIE CANDY VIGILANTE #5 review to find out how Pixie’s tour of the Sweeties HQ turned out.

We begin with the police arriving at a murder scene where Skurvy and his girlfriend were brutally killed by Hansel & Gretel in the last issue. The police suspect the deaths are gang-related, but the FE finds a strange pinkish goo on Skurvy’s body, raising suspicions that the deaths are not a simple mob hit.

Elsewhere, the Ice Cream Bunny Shop opens under new management. Sweetie tells Pixie about the building’s history, including a secret upstairs room used by Immortals as a regular meeting place. With the torus and introductions complete, Pixie accepts Sweetie’s invitation to become an immortal.

We conclude the issue with word of Skurvy’s death spreading and a fight brewing.

Final Thoughts

(Click this link 👇 to order this comic)

SWEETIE: CANDY VIGILANTE #5 is a sugary overload of exposition that fills up the pages, but just like cotton candy, is all fluff and no substance. There is no discernible plot, Sweetie’s actions have no apparent motive or direction (other than to make the world a sweet place), and the net result is a bizarre comic that you’ll forget as soon as you’re done with it.
