Is It Good?
SWEETIE: CANDY VIGILANTE #2 takes a peek behind the curtain of Sweetie’s organization and her way of doing things as Pixie Stix finds herself Sweetie’s latest recruit, whether she likes it or not. This issue positions itself as the one to answer all readers’ questions coming out of issue #1, but it makes the odd choice of answering all those questions without fully answering any.
Suzanne Cafiero uses issue #2 to introduce readers to John Andrew, aka Candy Wolf – a werewolf with a sweet tooth and bound in service to Sweetie. Andrew’s introduction is less surreal than Sweetie’s, and he presents himself as an advisor to Pixie Stix, but Andrew never answers a question directly or clearly. In short, the issue advertised as the one to answer all your questions does very little answering.
In fairness, Candy Wolf is an intriguing oddball, and he provides enough tidbits to help readers guess that Sweetie might be some type of fairy… or something. On that count, this issue provides enough information to take the edge off the first issue’s frustrating lack of clarity. Whether readers will feel it’s enough remains to be seen.
Zornow’s art is solid for the type of material presented. The character designs are interesting, and the panel compositions are good, but the line work is mildly sketchy and rough in a few spots. Cleaner, crisper lines would help this book considerably.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Check out our SWEETIE: CANDY VIGILANTE #1 review to find out how Pixie Stix was drafted into Sweetie’s service.
We begin with Pixie Stix, and her manager, flummoxed over Sweetie’s visit and their new manager – a living Christmas tree. Suddenly, a man with a white streak in his hair enters the bar. His name is John Andrew, aka Candy Wolf, and he’s here to make sure the new employees follow Sweeetie’s order to clean up the dead bodies.
The manager panics. Andrew notices Sweetie’s mark on the manager’s arm, indicating he’s a “bad egg,” so Andrew transforms into a werewolf and kills the manager. Pixi Stix has a “good egg” mark, so Andrew calmly explains he’s here to take Pixie to Sweetie to start her new life as part of the crew.
We conclude the issue with talking Christmas trees, talking in circles, and Santa’s personal relationships.

Final Thoughts

SWEETIE: CANDY VIGILANTE #2 makes the odd move of presenting itself as an exposition issue that will answer all your questions but answers precious few. Candy Wolf’s addition to the cast is intriguing, and the art is generally good, but it’s unclear yet if this series is a keeper.
