Is STARFINDER: ANGELS OF THE DRIFT #5 Good?

The reviewed issue marks the conclusion of the miniseries, offering a tabletop role-playing game-inspired narrative about Navasi and her crew on a mission to deliver a signal to an isolated planet. This planet is divided into two distinct cultures by a literal force field, maintaining segregation between the upper and lower classes. The storyline subtly addresses societal class divisions within the same culture, though delving too deeply into this theme may be best avoided.

The narrative follows Navasi and her crew as they face persecution from different factions, trapped in the midst of a war between the two classes. Their strategy involves utilizing a group of giant space worms named Kevon, who traverse the upper atmosphere of the planet. The crew plans to ride these worms Dune-style to create chaos, distract the warring factions, and infiltrate the command center. The ultimate goal is to deliver a signal that contains plans for drift engines, providing the planet and its factions the technology needed to overcome isolation and shape their destiny.

The issue features significant elements such as space battles, giant flying worms, telepathy technology, various weaponry, and action-adventure excitement expected from a series concluding in a grand style. Nasi and her crew successfully ride the space worms, infiltrate the command center, and deliver the signal, but the battle is far from over.

Overall, the issue offers a satisfying conclusion with a blend of sci-fi, rich lore, and intricate details in the artwork by Edu Menna and Adriano Augusto. The visuals depict intense scenes with complex character designs, battles, explosions, and fires. While the abundance of detail may be overwhelming in some panels, Edu Menna deserves credit for effectively conveying the depth of action within the limited space of each panel.

The review acknowledges that the issue may be challenging for those unfamiliar with the tabletop RPG, as it introduces a multitude of characters, races, and lore. It recommends a thorough understanding of previous issues to fully grasp the ongoing narrative. James L. Sutter succeeds in delivering what is expected from an RPG adaptation, but the density of information may prove overwhelming for readers seeking a straightforward sci-fi comic.
