Analysis of SPAWN #364:
Recap:
When we last left Al Simmons in Spawn #363, Spawn defeated Mandarin Spawn, earning the warrior’s allegiance. Meanwhile, Nyx was annoyed that Spawn’s resurrection sabotaged her grand plan’s timetable, forcing her to take more immediate action. Her solution? Nyx unleashed a massive golem on Earth, designed to destroy all the realms if it reaches full power.
Plot Analysis:
In Spawn #364, the forces gather from all corners of the Earth to stop Nyx’s “pet.” The issue begins with a walking tour of the realms to find out what each leader thinks of the current situation. First, we meet God sitting on his throne. He’s displeased because his elite angels failed to stop Nyx from ascending to Hell’s throne. God’s wrath is coming.
Next, we visit Gaia in Greenworld. She laments Nyx’s choice to take Hell’s throne because its power corrupts whoever sits on it. If something isn’t done to stop Nyx soon, Gaia believes she will have to wipe out all life on Earth to break its attraction for Heaven and Hell.
Last, we see Nyx on Hell’s throne, planning to commit mass bloodshed to force Spawn to complete the power-up of her giant beast. She assumes Spawn will do anything to protect Earth, not realizing that Nyx’s endgame is focused elsewhere.
The issue then cuts back to hours and minutes earlier as the military scrambles to defend the American coast and protect against large radiation waves emanating from the giant. Meanwhile, Spawn and his allies put out a call to all super beings on Earth to rally for a final stand, even if it means including the vampires and villains who harassed Spawn over the last year. The issue ends with the recon team confronting the giant as it stops and speaks its only demand – “Bring me Spawn…”
First Impressions:
Nothing gets the blood pumping like a buildup that puts all the pieces in place for a climactic fight. Since Nyx ascended to Hell’s throne, the series took a hit for languishing while Nyx worked in secret. Now, writer Todd McFarlane pays off the wait better than anyone probably expected, so let’s hope he can keep it up.
Artwork and Presentation:
You can’t say enough good things about Brett Booth’s addition to the Spawn title as the regular artist. Booth expertly retains the classic McFarlane look for the characters, adding a touch of the Jim Lee vibe with Adelso Corona’s bold ink strokes. There’s no action to speak of in this issue, but it still packs a visual punch in terms of dramatic presentation, edge, and fantastical eye candy.

Story Positives & Negatives:
The Positives:
The keyword for Spawn #364 is ‘momentum’. Todd McFarlane’s script, from start to finish, cranks up the pacing and anticipation by showing the desires of each realm, the consequences if they each don’t get what they want, and the stakes for Earth in a celestial tug of war. When you get the foundation right, everything works. McFarlane got it right.
The Negatives:
This close to the main event, readers should not be unclear about Nyx’s plan, specifically how it’s supposed to work. We know Nyx needs Spawn’s power to fully activate her beast, but why? Doesn’t Spawn’s power come from Hell? If Hell is the source of Spawn’s power, why does Nyx need him and what is she expecting him to do? Admittedly, this is a minor problem, but it’s noticeable.
Big Picture:
Series Continuity:
According to the narration, Spawn #364 marks the beginning of bringing super beings into the public awareness for this title. Instead of operating as urban legends from the shadows, humans will now have full knowledge of Spawn, his allies, and enemies, promising to upset the status quo for good. Will it stick? We shall see.

SPAWN #364 begins the wind-up to a climactic battle that promises to change everything about the Spawn universe. Todd McFarlane’s script successfully puts all the pieces in place to create an escalating sense of momentum, and Brett Booth’s art is inspired in more ways than one. This is one of the best Spawn issues since the Heaven/Hell war ended.
