Analysis of SPAWN #363:
Recap:
When we last left All Simmons in Spawn #362, Mandarin Spawn demanded Al join their cause, starting with submission to Mandarin’s authority. Spawn refused, prompting a fight to begin. In the end, Spawn’s greater experience and formidable power won the day, but even he wasn’t prepared to learn the identity of the person underneath Mandarin Spawn’s mask – Wanda.
Plot Analysis:
In Spawn #363, Al Simmons agrees to talk to his wife after they find a sunny spot so she can get some energy back. They teleport back to the rooftop location and gather Wanda’s Clown imps, then teleport to a location in some rocky desert. Before Spawn has a chance to orient himself, Mandarin Spawn attacks, confirming Wanda’s appearance was just a ruse. However, Spawn is more than prepared for the double-cross, so he thwarts Mandarin Spawn’s attack and entraps him in black energy. Beaten, Mandarin Spawn swears allegiance to Spawn.
Elsewhere, Nyx is miffed by the disturbance in her plan’s timetable. She’s forced to accelerate her goal of creating a behemoth that will conquer Heaven and all the celestial realms, but she needs Spawn’s hellfire to fully activate the inert giant.
Meanwhile, The Scorched and the U.S. Military each have their hands full, tracking down the source of violent disturbances around the globe. The issue ends when a video is received of a recon ship sent to a disturbance in the Pacific, which depicts Nyx’s giant golem emerging from the depths.
First Impressions:
Spawn #363 is one of the better issues in recent memory because Todd McFarlane mixes cool Spawn fights with plot development concerning Nyx’s plans and wild moments. If McFarlane can keep the plot pacing this high throughout the arc, we’ll have a winner on our hands.
Artwork and Presentation:
Brett Booth and Adelso Corona deliver a killer issue that shifts the balance of Spawn’s fight with Mandarin back and forth until there’s a clear winner. The splash pages in Hell give the story a large-scale feel, and the golem’s debut is epic.

Story Positives & Negatives:
The Positives:
Spawn #363 is the kind of issue that elevates your appreciation for the series, particularly when Todd McFarlane focuses on moving the story forward. You get cool moments of Spawn badassery, intriguing developments, and hints of big things to come regarding Nyx’s master plan.
The Negatives:
Everyone loves a good cliffhanger, but the one in Spawn #363 is a headscratcher. Nyx makes a big deal about needing Spawn to activate her golem, and on the last page, the golem appears to be alive and causing Kaiju-sized trouble. Something changed, and it isn’t spelled out very well, making the cliffhanger more confusing than intriguing.
