Analysis of SPAWN #353:
Plot Analysis:
Vampires! Vampires everywhere! What’s a Spawn to do when an ally is under the control of the king of the vampires, and another hero gets in the way? You strike up an alliance, of course.
In Spawn #352, we learned Bludd, king of the vampires, was in negotiations with an emissary named Fixer to provide vampire workers to the Agency. Meanwhile, Spawn sought Terry’s help to track down a mysterious new player wearing angel armor and taking out vampires on a quest to kill Bludd.
In Spawn #353, we get a brief refresher on Eddie Frank’s condition as half-angel, half-vampire. The outcome of the Heaven/Hell War deactivated the celestial controls in place that helped Eddie keep his vampiric side in check. Now, the Redeemer has become the Reaper.
Elsewhere, Terry informs Spawn that he believes this new hunter is after Bludd. If Bludd is killed, Eddie could be harmed by the broken connection, which is why Spawn didn’t take out Bludd as the best option.
In upstate New York, Bludd answers to a noise at his front door, and he’s attacked by the new hunter. She stabs him with an enchanted blade designed to take out the most powerful vampires. The blade does its job, but the dead body morphs into a shapeshifting demon, one of many Bludd employs to represent him in multiple locations as a safety measure.
When she searches the grounds, she’s met by Reaper and the real Bludd. The hunter leaps to attack, but she’s no match for two ultra-powerful vampires. Before Reaper can deliver the killing strike, he’s hit by a hail of bullets from Spawn.
Still outmatched but with better odds, the hunter and Spawn team up in the fight. Suddenly, the center of the brawl explodes from a missile launched nearby. Fixer is observing the fight from a distance, and he decides to lend the heroes a hand.
The diversion buys Spawn and the hunter a moment to run into the woods with called-in vampire hordes on their trail. Fixer radios the developments to his boss as the scrap continues.
Character Development:
Rory McConville’s narrative doesn’t necessarily spend time on one particular character over the other, but this issue efficiently gives you all the information you need about Eddie Frank, his condition, and why Eddie serves as the foundation of Spawn’s current mission. That new information casts Eddie as a tragic figure and elevates Spawn as a hero going to great lengths to save his friend.
Artwork and Presentation:
Corona and Henriques’s artwork looks amazing in this issue. Given the nature of the plot (vampires), the art team has an opportunity to get bloodier and gorier than usual, so horror fans will have a ball with this issue, and Spawn fans will get a pleasing eye-full.
Art Samples:
Pacing and Structure:
McConville’s script moves at a brisk, steady pace. The scene transitions are buttery smooth, and the balanced mix of dialog and action makes this issue an enjoyable reading experience.
Regarding the plot structure, Spawn comics tend to tell stories in baby steps, but McConville puts a little more push behind the plot to give readers key information, clarify the stakes, and follow along with the action for a solid entry in the series.
On the downside, Spawn is perhaps a little too adept at getting out of life-threatening situations without his powers, but you don’t have to suspend disbelief too much to accept his survivability.
Thematic Exploration:
Thematically, McConville takes Spawn along on the classic hero’s journey of the quest variety. Spawn must find a way to save his friend without killing him, and every new development either supports Spawn’s goal or threatens to sabotage it.
The Bigger Picture:
Series Continuity:
Now that we know what’s up with Eddie Frank, the main Spawn title capitalizes on the events of the Heaven/Hell War from a unique and unexpected perspective. It’s possible that the solution to Eddie’s problem is the dissolution of the Dead Zone, but that development would have consequences across multiple titles.
