Analysis of SPACE GHOST #9:
Recap:
When last we left the galactic hero in Space Ghost #8, Space Ghost crossed paths with the Iron General, Metallus, sending the hero into a rage-filled revenge quest. Metallus is the tyrant responsible for the death of Space Ghost’s family, so Space Ghost latches onto Metallus’s ship and follows the villain back to his base, but Metallus is more than prepared for Space Ghost’s infiltration. The issue ended with Jan and Jace helplessly watching a video feed of Space Ghost’s last moments and Metallus sending his robot army to invade the Galactic Federation.
Plot Analysis:
In Space Ghost #9, Metallus’s invasion of the Galactic Federation’s home world begins in earnest. An army of robot drones swarms the capital city, destroying everything in its path. Meanwhile, Metallus directs his battleship to open fire on buildings, groups of citizens, and anything big enough to turn to ash.
On the streets below, Jan and Jace rescue who they can from robot attacks. Suddenly, they’re spotted and chased by a giant, spider-like robot with orders to capture Space Ghost’s associates. Jan gets a bright idea to lead the chase into a construction site, where she finds an electromagnetic crane to disrupt the metallic monster. However, Jan finds her plan’s success has an unexpected side effect.
Aboard Metallus’s ship, Space Ghost weaves his way among patrols and down service tunnels, looking for a way to stop Metallus without the use of his gauntlets. When Space Ghost stumbles upon the storeroom containing explosives, the hero gets a grand idea to cripple Metallus’s ship and the villain’s plans.
The issue concludes with exploiting a weakness, a devastating crash, and a reminder to take the high road.
First Impressions:
Space Ghost #9 is yet another example of adapting classic properties into the modern era the right way. David Pepose delivers a script laced with action, edge-of-your-seat thrills, drama, emotional depth, and a satisfying conclusion. You can’t ask for more than that.
Artwork and Presentation:
Jonathan Lau cements his reputation as one of the best artists at Dynamite in Space Ghost #9. Jan, Jace, Space Ghost, and even Blip are portrayed at their heroic best. Lau’s linework looks amazing, and the action choreography is stellar.
Art Samples:

Story Positives & Negatives:
The Positives:
Space Ghost #9 has it all in both writing and art. David Pepose’s power-packed script gives you everything you’re looking for in a spacefaring, action/adventure tale. Specifically, Pepose’s balanced blend of action, drama, and emotional beats is practically cinematic.
The Negatives:
There’s not much to criticize with this issue. You could maybe argue that Jan’s discovery is a little too simplistic or convenient, but that’s a nitpick beyond picky.
The Bigger Picture:
Series Continuity:
Are there plans to crossover Space Ghost with other classic properties? Yes. Dynamite has announced Space Ghost will join Jonny Quest (our other favorite adaptation from Dynamite) in March 2025, written by current Jonny Quest scribe Joe Casey.
