Analysis of SPACE GHOST #12:

Recap:

When we last left the galaxy’s greatest vigilante in Space Ghost #11, Dr. Xander Ibal assembled the worst of the worst enemies of Space Ghost to form the Council of Doom. The Council staged a coordinated attack on Space Ghost’s base to destroy his advanced weapons, ship, and gear. Why? To get the one thing that matters to Dr. Ibal – Blip. The issue concluded with Blip taken hostage and Team Space Ghost on the ropes.

Plot Analysis:

In Space Ghost #12, Team Space Ghost uses the one weapon the Council of Doom will never understand – teamwork. The issue begins with Jan and Jace dragging a badly injured Space ghost to a secluded spot to regroup. Their only option to get the hero back onto his feet is to use one of his power gauntlets to cauterize his bleeding wound.

Meanwhile, the council has already shipped Blip back to Dr. Ibal for examination while they scour Ghost Planet for Space Ghost’s bodies. Without proof of death, they assume he’s still alive, so Moltar initiates a self-destruct device to blow the planet up from the core. Team Space Ghost can’t fight with brute force, so they decide to use the egos and obsessions of the villains against each other.

First, Jan and Jace stoke a flame to draw Moltar’s attention. When Metallus’s enthusiasm to attack the sidekicks extinguishes the flames, Moltar attacks Metallus. In a rage, Moltar unleashes a torrent of flames that sets off a strategically placed pool of rocket fuel, knocking out Metallus, Moltar, and Creature King.

Next, Space Ghost transmits a help message planted to sow suspicion between Brak, Zorak, and Black Widow. Soon, the villains are at each other’s throats. When the dust settles, the villains have only moments to teleport away from the planet before it explodes. The issue ends with Space Ghost performing a planet-sized act of strength and Dr. Ibal using pain to extract the mind-controlling will of Ultima.

First Impressions:

Well, we were wondering when writer David Pepose was going to get back to the secret computer code inside Blip’s head. This issue makes it clear what it can do and why it’s so dangerous, so if you’ve been waiting for that shoe to drop, wonder no longer.

Artwork and Presentation:

Jonathan Lau can do no wrong as he presents a visual experience full of action, tension, and fiery developments that reach planetary proportions. Lau’s pencils/inks are levels above the norm, and Andrew Dalhouse’s glowing, fiery colors are amazing.

Story Positives & Negatives:

The Positives:

David Pepose concludes the assault on Ghost Planet with edge-of-your-seat tension, clever twists and turns, and a superheroic conclusion that’s satisfying. Further, the ending perfectly dovetails into an even bigger challenge for Team Space Ghost that leaves you anxious for the next issue… as it should.

The Negatives:

Space Ghost #12’s teeny tiniest flaw is the lack of explanation surrounding the computer code in Blip’s head and why it was placed in the monkey in the first place. We noted in the review for the Space Ghost #1 that Blip’s “role” was odd, so it appears he was a convenient plot device that didn’t really have a good reason to exist.

Big Picture:

Series Continuity:

If you picked up last week’s Space Ghost/Jonny Quest: Spacequest #1, you might rightly wonder how this issue fits into that crossover event. So far, it doesn’t. That said, the crossover’s first issue focused almost entirely on Team Quest, so a connection might appear in the next few issues. Time will tell.

Final Thoughts:

SPACE GHOST #12 is another stellar action fest bristling with drama, twists, and turns. David Pepose’s script is on fire (literally) as the team fights to stop the destruction of their planet, and Jonathan Lau’s artwork is levels above the average Big 2 comic.

Score: 9.5/10
