Analysis of SPACE GHOST #11:
Recap:
When we last left the galaxy’s greatest vigilante in Space Ghost #10, the team encountered Space Spectre – a man from the future with Space Ghost’s costume and advanced versions of his gadgets – who came to destroy the plans of villains before they began. Space Ghost and Jan are saddened to learn Space Spectre is Jace, all grown up, who suffered from pain and loss over the years. The issue ended when Jace returned to his time with a new sense of hope. Unfortunately, his time portal allowed a Space Ghost villain to return.
Plot Analysis:
In Space Ghost #11, Zorak emerges to take revenge on Space Ghost. Before the insect-like villain can cause too much damage, he’s approached by Dr. Ibal Xander of Robo Corps with a tantalizing offer. Xander will show Zorak the location of Space Ghost’s base if the zealot retrieves a special item for Xander. Further, the nefarious executive brought a collection of Space Ghost villains he arranged to have released from prison as Zorak’s Council of Doom – Moltar, Metallus, Black Widow, Brak, and Creature King.
Elsewhere, Space Ghost works late, saving a colony from space piranhas. Jan and Jace are left behind at the base and begin to feel that Space Ghost has been keeping them at arms’ length to keep them safe, but the isolation frustrates them. Jan decides to submit an application to the Space Academy if she can’t act as Space Ghost’s partner. When Space Ghost returns, he flies off the handle when he learns about Jan’s application. After a tense argument, Jan and Jace decide to leave.
Space Ghost fumes over his stubbornness in driving Jan and Jace away. Suddenly, the base is attacked by the Council of Doom. Space Ghost puts up a valiant fight, but the numbers are too great. Meanwhile, Jan and Jace have second thoughts about leaving in anger, so they radio Space Ghost to let him know they’re alright. When they hear the shouts and sounds of battle, the siblings immediately head back to help.
The issue ends with a mega-battle that destroys most of Space Ghost’s base and the Council of Doom getting their hands on Xander’s prize – Blip.
First Impressions:
Rousing, dramatic, and action-packed – these are the phrases that come to mind in writer David Pepose’s latest entry in one of Dynamite’s best IP adaptations in ages. When a hero defeats every supervillain he faces, what could be better than a supervillain council to crank the threat level up by magnitudes? David Pepose is on fire in this series.
Artwork and Presentation:
It’s no surprise that Jonathan Lau takes the classic adventure of Pepose’s script and makes it ten times better with energetic fight scenes, tons of drama infused into the visuals, and a pitch-perfect coloring job by Andrew Dalhouse. The art team is due all the accolades we can muster for a gorgeous-looking comic.

Story Positives & Negatives:
The Positives:
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, David Pepose nails the spirit of action, adventure, and excitement that made the original cartoon a hit. You get a hero you can root for pitted against an overwhelming threat with a solid cliffhanger. What more could you want?
The Negatives:
There’s not a blessed thing wrong with this comic. Above and beyond the concept and technical execution, Space Ghost #11 also serves as an excellent jumping-on point for new readers.
The Bigger Picture:
Series Continuity:
Yes, that’s right. If you haven’t heard already, Space Ghost will participate in a crossover miniseries with Jonny Quest. The aptly named Spacequest #1 was set to be released this week, but it’s been delayed due to scheduling issues. We’ll check it out as soon as the issue is available.
