Is It Good?
SNOW WHITE: ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE #1 takes the interesting approach of retelling classic fairytale stories by adding a horrific, monstrous, zombie-rific twist. Filled with plenty of over-the-top, gory action and fresh takes on classic themes, there’s a lot to like in this first issue.
SNOW WHITE: ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE #1 works best by its (mostly) wordless action. There are barely two paragraphs worth of dialog or narration in the entire issue, so what writer Brenton Lengel has done is rely HEAVILY on the art to tell the lion’s share of the story. For the most part, that lean is successful. You get the gist of who’s who and what’s happening, primarily through the action, with an occasional nudge from the sparse narration. We often say the story should be furthered through the action, so this is a perfect example of that rule.
That said, sometimes a little more explanation would be helpful. If you’re familiar with Red Riding Hood and Snow White, you’ll get the gist of what’s happening… sort of. However, the deviations from the stories you already know aren’t always clear. For example, Red gets attacked by a wolf that’s not a wolf because it looks like a mannish werewolf, but it also appears to be a zombie, but maybe not(?). The monsters are unique and interesting, but it’s not obvious what they are.
Since this issue leans so heavily on the art to tell the story, we need to talk about Hyeondo Park’s gory, energetic, slam-tastic art. The human characters are memorable, with a whimsical flair in their clothes, their appearance, and the way they move. When the monsters attack, they’re all claws, teeth, and blood. The art style is a captivating mix of Okazaki’s Afro Samurai mixed with Tarantino’s cinematic sensibility. If that’s not a recipe for success, nothing is.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a red-hooded girl walking through the forest when she’s suddenly attacked by a wolf who’s not a wolf and who might be a zombie. The girl is viciously mauled.
Later a handsome young man strolls nearby the same location when he encounters the body of the girl, now brought back to life and somewhat wolfish as well. Elsewhere, an armed woman finds one of the apples dropped by the red-hooded girl and is quickly attacked by the first wolf-not-a-wolf. However, this armed woman is an expert hunter and is not about to get bit by any monster.
We conclude the issue with martial arts moves that would make Bruce Lee take notice, explosive headshots, and a kiss.

The story leans heavily on the art to tell the story, but you get the gist pretty clearly for most of the issue, and the art is wildly entertaining.
