What Is SNAPS (ONE-SHOT) About?
We’re no stranger to Jon Clark’s brand of surreal yet realistic horror from Scout Comics. This time, Clark delivers a new tale of woe that mixes equal parts investigation and morality in SNAPS (ONE-SHOT).
Clark’s tale centers on two roommates, Keith and Oliver. One night, Oliver interrupts Keith’s date to explain he’s captured something disturbing by pure chance while taking photos during his lunch break. While taking photos in the park, Oliver catches a monstrous figure attacking a homeless man inside an abandoned car. When Oliver looks at the car and homeless man with the naked eye, he sees nothing but a man in distress. Through the lens of his camera, he sees a monster tearing the man to shreds.
Oliver calls 9-1-1 for help, but the man soon dies. According to the official report, the homeless man dies of a heart attack. Oliver suspects the monsters are all around us, but he’s unable to reproduce the photos. He soon suspects the creatures are a form of harbinger visiting people about to die, so he begins to visit nursing homes and emergency rooms to wait for near-death “opportunities.”
Oliver becomes increasingly obsessed with unlocking this key to an afterlife because he never got over the death of his younger sister when they were kids. After playing out an assortment of theories, Oliver begins to suspect the monster may have been a harbinger of people who deserve to die for committing a great wrong.
Keith is shocked by the photo evidence but skeptical as to its origins. However, his shock turns to nervousness when Oliver shows more evidence of another harbinger. One that’s following Keith. Oliver’s attempt to convince Keith of the truth turns into something else when the harbinger looks strangely familiar.

What did we like about SNAPS (ONE-SHOT)?
Clark has a knack for coming up with unique twists on familiar concepts, and this issue is no exception. Monsters that can only be seen through the lens of a camera are nothing new, but it’s the added layer of turning the horror concept into a morality tale that makes this issue a standout. Overall, it’s a creepy concept with strong execution.
What didn’t we like about SNAPS (ONE-SHOT)?
Oliver makes one or two leaps in logic to come to his final realization about the harbinger following Keith. You have to just “go with it” when accepting Oliver knew what the second harbinger was all about, who it was after, and why. Clark could have connected those dots a little more clearly.
How’s the Art?
Clark’s photo-referenced style with watercolor applications gives the story an element of realism with a surreal veneer. There’s a dreamlike quality to Clark’s artistic approach that makes grounded horror supremely effective, and it suits this story to a tee.

SNAPS (ONE-SHOT) takes readers on a creepy ride when an amateur photographer learns monsters are hiding in plain sight. The central premise and execution will give horror lovers the chills, and the surrealistic art is super effective, especially for the monster.
