Was It Good?

Heh. Okay. SNAKE #1 is fun.

Brought to you by the fine folks at Nimprod Comics and Isle2 Comics, SNAKE #1 is a refreshed take on the classic Old West films centering around a lone gunslinger bringing justice with a bullet. There’s no earth-shattering pathos or high-concept plot in this comic, but there’s plenty of cool badassery to satisfy even the pickiest of Western cinema connoisseurs.

The plot centers around Snake, a former outlaw who decides to turn her life around. She uses her talents and charms to rid the Old West of those who would harm the innocent. The story progression rings as true as any classic Clint Eastwood Western film with a little more sass and a lot more T&A. Snake’s cheesecake-ish outfit is out of character for the period, but that’s part of the unique charm in this issue. She looks like a pinup, but her “assets” enhance her effectiveness as a femme fatale in addition to being an expert killer.

If you’re a fan of classic Westerns, this comic works. If you like to have your expectations subverted the right way, this comic works. If you like a little cheesecake, as long as it isn’t gratuitous, this comic works.

The minor down point in this issue is the quality of the linework from Reis and Ciuffi. The linework is nearly good, but there are a few spots where the anatomy proportions and angles feel off. However, everything else about the art is great. The coloring is on point, and the gritty, tension-filled panel angles are practically perfect.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

We begin with an average day in Cambra Town, 1873. The mining town hustles and bustles as timid folks go on about their business. Suddenly, a stranger strides into town and enters the saloon for a drink. Snake has arrived, and everyone knows it based on her appearance and reputation.

The mining foreman, Zeke, and his violent sidekick, Travis, aren’t too fond of strangers threatening their stranglehold on Cambra Town. When they approach Snake to clarify who’s in charge, Snake makes it clear that Zeke’s in charge until she decides otherwise. What follows is a series of interactions where Snake challenges Zeke’s authority in the town at every turn. Her presence inspires the townsfolk to stand up to Zeke, forcing him to make an example of the local livery store owner.

That night, a small group of Zeke’s men sneaks up to the hotel room where Snake is staying, but they find a Snake is just as deadly in the dark. We conclude the issue with men who hear no evil, speak no evil, and see no evil.

SNAKE #1 is a fantastic indie take on the classic, lone gunslinger brand of Western. The story evokes everything you love about Clint Eastwood-style Westerns, and the main character’s uniqueness adds a memorable twist to the story.
