Is SKEETERS #1 Good?
Yep, that’s about the long and the short of it. SKEETERS #1 is a true blue creature feature from Bob Frantz and Kevin Cuffe about a Virginia town about to experience the worst case of bug bites you’ve ever seen.
Frantz and Cuffe’s script centers on Sheriff Carla McCord as she watches over the sleepy town of Kankakee, Virginia. When a research experiment in the town’s fancy government research lab goes horribly wrong, it isn’t long before woodland creatures, livestock, people, and anything with blood in its veins succumbs to mutant mosquitoes who get bigger when they feed.
If you’re wondering how the mutant bloodsuckers came to be, patience is in order. This first issue does a fine job of setting up the scenario and the escalating death toll, but the particulars of the mosquitoes’ origin are a mystery yet to be revealed.
What’s great about SKEETERS #1? If you like no-nonsense monster stories of the B-Movie variety, you’re in for a treat. Frantz and Cuffe give you a simple setup with distinctive characters and a terrifying swarm of monsters. Simple, clear, and straight to the point.
What’s not so great about SKEETERS #1? Technically, there’s nothing wrong with this issue. Again, the mystery of the mosquitoes’ origin is reserved for a future issue, so it remains to be seen if the explanation is satisfying.
How’s the art? Kelly Williams’s caricature-ish style suits the B-Movie vibe of the story to a tee. Of course, the big sell in a story of this type is the monster(s) and the gore. On both counts, Williams nails the assignment.

SKEETERS #1 is as close to a classic B-Movie creature feature as you can get in comic form. Frantz and Cuffe’s setup is clear, to the point, and super simple, and Williams’s artistic take on the mutant monster mosquitoes and the gore they create is perfect.
