Is It Good?
File SIRENS GATE #3 under the heading of “the issue that explains (almost) everything.” Shannon Maer pulls back the curtain on Tara’s new life after death to give readers plenty of information to flesh out the world and Tara’s place in it. Are the answers as satisfying as the questions hyped them up to be? Sorta, kinda, maybe.
When last we left Tara, a Hunter stabbed her through the gut while her friends stood helplessly by. Now, the mysterious woman we’ve seen lurking in the shadows arrives to participate in the fight, resulting in all sorts of revelations, clarifications, and exposition.
Therefore, this issue is really a mixed bag of very little action, a whole lot of talking, and partial answers that get readers most of the way to the truth but not quite all the way. If you’ve felt frustrated by the lack of clarity from the first issues, this issue will provide some relief. If you didn’t mind the mystery as long as you got that sweet, sweet monster-fighting action, this issue may be a downer.
The highly stylized art is fit for purpose, which makes sense considering Shannon Maer is both the artist and writer. That said, Maer’s style works better on covers than on the internal pages, as every character looks incredibly stiff, like posed mannequins. The novelty of Maer’s style is a strong selling point, but in large doses, this style will only appeal to a small audience.

Check out our SIRENS GATE #2 review to find out how Tara collided with the wrong end of a very large knife.
When last we left Tara, an assassin ran her through with a very long knife. Now, the hooded mystery woman we saw in the first issue arrives to join the fight. Tara instinctively pulls the knife out, unleashing a shockwave of power that knocks everyone back and sends the assassin running.
Michael rushes to Tara’s side and discovers her wounds healed. The hooded mystery woman unmasks herself, showing everyone she’s
really Lady Rose and a powerful sorceress. Lady Rose explains deadly forces are after Tara because her resurrection factors into a prophecy foretelling the end of the world.
We conclude the issue with discussions about the future, a second attack, and a spicy pounce.

Final Thoughts

SIRENS GATE #3 answers many of the questions introduced in the first few issues with a lot of exposition and dialog but not much else. The stylized art is fine for what it is, albeit very stiff, and the story has potential, so this is a tentative recommendation.
