Is SIMON SAYZ #2 Good?
Jeff Meuth’s latest entry in the “serial killer with a twist” story cranks up the gore and escalates the stakes in SIMON SAYZ #2. Simon is introduced to the supernatural forces vying for his attention, which makes for a more expansive story, but the clunky scene work and even clunkier dialog make this comic a struggle to get through.
When last we left Simon, his life as a serial killer took on a new life after he escaped arrest, aided by a creepy voice in his head. Meanwhile, we learn the Catholic Church leadership may be interested in Simon’s exploits as part of a larger conflict. Now, Simon is guided to demons with a taste for human flesh so that he can help them recover an ancient artifact. Simultaneously, the Church leadership sends a Cardinal, who may not be human, to beat Simon to the artifact.
Be forewarned. This issue leans much heavier into the gore compared to the first issue. One of the demons Simon encounters, Kali, kills for fun and eats people for power. You get to see Kali’s habits in very explicit detail, so set your expectations accordingly if you’re squeamish.
What’s great about SIMON SAYZ #2? For a visually small, confined story, the plot feels big and growing. Meuth keeps the plot moving at a decent pace, and the story feels like it could be headed for something big. Further, the competing forces don’t appear to be good versus evil, but one kind of evil versus another kind of evil, so the story has the added twist of turning into a race between devils.
What’s not so great about SIMON SAYZ #2? The scene development, transitions, and lettering are terrible. At a high level, you can follow what’s happening, but individual scenes don’t develop fully, the scenes jump from one place to the next without captions or setup, and the “creepy” lettering Meuth uses in some spots is almost unreadable. Plus, spelling and grammar mistakes abound. The issue would have been helped greatly by a meticulous editor.
How’s the art? Meuth’s art style is creepy, gory, and gross as it should be in a horror comic of this sort. This issue is not for the squeamish, and it’s in the horror imagery where Meuth’s style works best. During daylight scenes between normal people, you can see the lack of refinement and consistency in Meuth’s figure work, so the art is a mixed bag.

Check out our SIMON SAYZ #1 review to find out how Simon’s career as a serial killer really picked up steam.
We begin with the Master learning that a holy relic has been discovered – a piece of bread touched by Jesus at the Last Supper. The Master sends Cardinal Reiqht to cover the artifact and kill anyone who gets in his way.
Elsewhere, the voice sends Simon to a building where he meets Dorisan, the King of the Ghouls. Suddenly, Dorisan attacks Simon but then immediately disappears. Next, Simon meets Kali, a demon who eats humans to gain power. Kali has an assignment for Simon – he must help her track down a woman in possession of a special object.
We conclude the issue with a mask, torture, and cleaning house.

Final Thoughts

SIMON SAYZ #2 is a creepy, gory entry in the series that picks up the pace of the impending supernatural war. That said, the sub-par technical execution, in terms of scene development, transitions, and lettering, makes this issue a tough read.
