Is SIMON SAYZ #1 Good?

SIMON SAYZ #1 should be marked with a warning label – Do Not Read After Eating! Jeff Meuth’s demonic tale of murder and mayhem puts a unique spin on Biblical lore and modern Catholicism to put readers at the heart of a supernatural war you didn’t know was raging.

Meuth’s script centers on Simon – a man plagued by a voice continually urging him to kill, rip, tear, and mutilate innocents who cross his path. Simon is eventually captured and deemed insane, but when he escapes, the voice in Simon’s voice goes quiet… until the time to kill comes screaming back with a vengeance and a purpose.

Be forewarned. This comic has creative, unusual displays of gore to satisfy your horror-loving tastes. The amount of viscera doesn’t quite rise to the level of splatter gore, but there’s enough here to jiggle the tummies of the mildly squeamish.

What’s great about SIMON SAYZ #1? A man turned into a killer through demon possession is nothing new, but Meuth’s twist teases a background conflict of Biblical proportions, making the story feel larger in scope and scale. The requisite writing elements of plotting, pacing, and dialog are all on point. And the tease about a connection to the Roman Catholic Church is intriguing.

What’s not so great about SIMON SAYZ #1? The narrative flow could use a few more captions to explain where and when we are in the story. Specifically, there’s a time jump at the third-way mark that isn’t obvious, so words of clarification would be helpful.

How’s the art? Meuth’s sketchy, rendered style suits the mood of the story Meuth is telling. Some horror is in your face. Other horrors are suggested, which creates shock through inference, which is powerful when done well.

What’s SIMON SAYZ #1 About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

We begin with a man named Simon recalling the grisly work of his latest murder. A disembodied voice unceasingly eggs Simon on to kill and mutilate. When Simon is captured, he’s judged criminally insane and committed to an asylum.

One night, the voice screams at Simon to kill the therapist trying to treat him. Simon complies and escapes the asylum. Strangely, the voice goes quiet for several months. Just when Simon thinks he’s free, mentally and physically, the voice returns to drive Simon to kill again. This time, the voice chooses to explain why Simon was chosen for evil work.

We conclude the issue with a long bloodline, holy collaboration, and a wartime escalation.
