Analysis of SILVERHAWKS #4:

Plot:

After the team got torn apart (literally) by Mon*Star in SilverHawks #3, Stargazer assesses the damage. Osprey survived but needs extensive repairs. The IDF guards who tried to stop Windhammer are having a tougher time because the brother is dying, and his bond with his sister means she’ll die as well, so Stargazer offers to upgrade them both. Lastly, the boy from the Planet of the Mimes wants in on the upgrade action, but Stargazer sends him packing. Later, Stargazer learns the boy broke into a cryo-lab and hacked the systems to upgrade himself.

When the team learns that two thieves stole Mon*Star’s main ride, Sky-Runner, they intercept the payoff between the thieves and Mon*Star’s henchmen, Yes-Man and Buzz-Saw. However, Yes-Man has no intention of paying for what the thieves stole from his master. During the fight, Sky-Runner is released, and Yes-Man gets away, but not before the thieves deliver a message – The Covenant is coming for Mon*Star.

Artwork and Presentation:

SilverHawks #4 is one of George Kambadais’s weaker issues. Ed Brisson’s script presents a few moments of deep melodrama and one large-scale battle. Kambadais’s pencils just can’t portray the impact Brisson calls for, and the big battle scene looks flat and amateurish.

Character Work:

The crux of the issue rests on Stargazer building a new team after losing Sparrow, Gray, and Red-Tail. Brisson accomplishes the goal, but it happens quickly, with very little consideration from any team members regarding the voluntary loss of their humanity. This issue should contain several deep moments as characters consider a life-altering change, but it never happens.

Structure:

Ed Brisson’s plot structure is generally sound, but it happens too quickly to get invested in what’s happening. In other words, you feel like you’re reading a quick synopsis of the new team coming together to continue the fight rather than a journey with stakes and drama.

Strongest Point(s):

If you’re a diehard SilverHawks fan, the arrival of several familiar characters from the original cartoon will be a highlight. Yes-Man is his smarmy best. Buzz-Saw is an intimidating thug, and Sky-Runner is as weird as ever.

Weakest Point(s):

There’s nothing particularly fun about this issue. The artwork is weak, and Brisson’s script is rushed and lacks punch. Forgettable and fun is not the direction this title should be headed towards.

Final Thoughts:

SILVERHAWKS #4 is nothing to write home about. After the team is nearly destroyed in the last issue, Ed Brisson throws a new team together almost immediately with little emotion or drama to make the hard choices meaningful. Plus, George Kambadais’s artwork is completely sub-par.

Score: 3.5/10
