Was It Good?
SILENCE #2 is the type of horror comic that leaves you with the rare feeling of “good” confusion. Confusion over whether or not what the main character is experiencing is real and whether or not you believe what’s happening. This is the essence of psychological horror, and Pozios nails the concept in this issue.
In this issue, our main character, washed-up comics prop and recovering patient, Kane, is feeling the power of the Wendigo all around him. The promise of energy, power, and unlocked potential frees Kane to do whatever he wants to whomever he wants… including deadly, gruesome acts. However, you’re never quite sure if he’s imagining everything, if he’s turned into a psychotic murderer, or if he’s truly possessed by a malignant force. The guessing is what sells this story, and Pozios keeps you guessing at every turn.
Sanchez’s art style helps to elevate the guessing event further by showing you the Wendigo. By presenting the Wendigo as an outline, a simple shape, you can believe Kane transforms into a murderous beast or you could just as well believe it’s all part of Kane’s imagination. You can’t tell and the guessing pulls you forward with heaps of curiosity.
This is a gem of a horror comic, and if you’re not familiar with the quiet, psychological, horror subgenre, this is a great entry point.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
It’s been a long time, so refresh yourself on how Kane came to be a host for the Wendigo (or is he?) by reading our SILENCE #1 review.
We begin with the local sheriff examining a beheaded body bear the B&B Stanley Kane rented to get away while he recovers from his heart episode in the last issue. The Sheriff knows Kane is drawing more comics down at the local coffee shop and heads over to find him.
We see Kane drawing his masterpiece as he drinks coffee when the Sheriff walks in and introduces himself. Kane reacts angrily to the introduction but quickly calms down when he realizes it’s the Sheriff. The Sheriff, noticing what Kane is working on, offers to give him a tour of recently discovered cave paintings. Kane eagerly accepts and they agree to meet in an hour.
After the Sheriff leaves, Kane tries to get back into the groove of his drawings but he can’t due to the noise from the workers behind the counter. Kane notices there’s nobody around besides the workers as it’s close to closing time. Kane transforms into the beastly Wendigo.
We conclude the issue with a bathroom break, closing time, and a risky cave tour.

Final Thoughts
SILENCE #2 is an enjoyable little gem for horror fans of stories that keep you guessing. The tight drips of dialog are designed to keep you on edge, and the designs show you gruesome death and destruction while suggesting it may not be real. Either way, this is a strongly recommended pick for horror fans.
