Is It Good?
SHERLOCK: A SCANDAL IN BELGRAVIA PART 2 #4 is a prologue to the story adapted from the BBC hit series, but more than that, it’s an exquisite adaptation that fully captures the heart and soul of the originally televised episode. This comic, in much the same way as the original show, explodes with emotion in every nuance and sideways glance.
This will be an odd review because it’s rare that a comic embodies such a direct adaptation as we have here. If you’ve watched the original show, this comic doesn’t deviate one ounce from the source material, so the question is whether or not Jay.’s art can reproduce the subtle performances of the actors. Thankfully, the acting here is just as powerful and textured, perhaps more so because you can let the acting sit and breathe in each panel as long as wish.
Moffat’s script, likewise, is as perfect an adaptation of a story from one medium to the next as you could possibly imagine. Since Moffat wrote the original screenplay, that shouldn’t be a surprise, but we’ve encountered many writers who’ve moved from television or film to comics with wildly mixed results.
Again, the biggest credit for the success of this comic belongs to Jay. for the well-crafted art and character acting. The Manga style is perfect for using large expressive eyes to communicate a range of thoughts with a single glance and Jay. uses that style here for maximum effectiveness. Admittedly, Manga-style comics may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but this is a must-have fusion for Sherlock fans.
