Is It Good?

This is it! SHERLOCK: A SCANDAL IN BELGRAVIA PART 2 #3 is the moment that makes A Scandal In Belgravia one of the standout episodes of the series, and it’s recreated here with all the graceful nuance and impact of the show, possibly better.

The beauty of Moffat’s script is the complete mess MoD and Sherlock find themselves in once the Lady makes her grand entrance to claim victory. Mycroft knows his work (and his reputation) is ruined, Sherlock is surprised by how badly he was duped into helping ruin his brother and the MoD, and the Lady is practically regal in her arrogance and gloating. This adaptation perfectly mimics the source material in that every moment leads the reader to a realization regarding the gravity of the situation and how much they were duped right along with Sherlock. Moffat’s script is a masterstroke of misdirection, deception, and surprise.

The issue takes the story to the next level in the last scene when the Lady delivers her list of demands after Mycroft and Sherlock discuss all possible options, only to conclude they’re well and truly beaten. Moffat delivers a classic “all hope is lost” moment that should be studied and emulated for years to come. When the turn comes, the depth of failure makes the high of victory all the more satisfying.

Jay.’s art is phenomenal in this issue and may be an improvement on the show. Specifically, Jay. expertly uses close-ups of eyes and mouths to capture the looks of understanding with the precision of a sniper. When the Lady or Sherlock hears a slight whisper of new information, just the close-up of a single eye going wide gives you all the emotional punch you need, and it’s spectacular.

Check out our SHERLOCK: A SCANDAL IN BELGRAVIA PART 2 #2 review to find out how Sherlock was so masterfully duped.

We begin with Sherlock entering the plane destined to explode in a morally dubious plan by the MoD to make terrorists and rival governments think a fake tragedy is real. Inside, Sherlock is confronted by Mycroft who explains how the plan is ruined, in part, by Sherlock’s relentless detecting. Suddenly, the Lady enters to confirm the plan’s ruination and how her manipulation of Sherlock led to its downfall.

Later the trio meets to discuss terms. The Lady explains every possible option that won’t work to extract the contents of her phone, and Sherlock reluctantly confirms each one. We conclude the issue with sentiment, Sherlock’s ability to “read the room,” and a clever play on words.

SHERLOCK: A SCANDAL IN BELGRAVIA PART 2 #3 is a pristine adaptation of one of the best segments of one of the best BBC Sherlock episodes. The character reactions are so precisely nuanced, you can practically hear their thoughts screaming off the page, and when the big moment comes, Jay.’s art chooses just the right angles and close-ups to give every second a powerful breath of life.
