Is SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE – FATAL EXAMS #4 Good?
We’re not quite sure what to make of SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE – FATAL EXAMS #4, but one thing is absolutely clear. Steven E. de Souza and Wes Clark Jr. will have to pull off a miracle in the next and final issue to explain what’s happening on multiple fronts and have Sheena save the day in one complete comic. That’s a tall order for anyone.
When last we left Sheena, her investigation into the thugs taking core samples from the protected nature preserve turned up nothing, literally. The soil samples show nothing of note. Meanwhile, killers raided Bob’s apartment, “Rachel” and her friends were attacked by a masked man stealing an important book for which the Gardener was arrested, and “Rachel’s” classmates appear to be under a hypnotic shopping spell by an online prosperity guru. Oy!
Now, the Gardener escapes jail (with Sheena’s help), the research into the core sample locations leads Sheena and her allies to an abandoned communications station, and the identity of the Caballero is revealed.
If you think that’s a lot, between the major plot developments, you get murder-by-hippo, planning sessions for a VIP visit to the school, a history lesson on government mind control research, and more. It’s a lot.
What’s great about SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE – FATAL EXAMS #4? If nothing else, you get plenty of plot for the cover price. De Souza and Clark Jr. keep multiple plates spinning, presumably with the intention of tying it all together in the finale.
What’s not so great about SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE – FATAL EXAMS #4? Nothing is clear yet, which is not where you want to be in the penultimate issue. You don’t know why the villains are taking core samples, you don’t know why schoolgirls are brainwashed into praying for free stuff, you don’t know what a Gardener with a mysterious past is doing at the school, and you don’t know what the mysterious Caballero wants out of all this. It’s not that there’s an impatient rush to figure out the answers. It’s that there are no clues to work with, so every action Sheena takes is a blind reach. Nothing is set up or developed when following along is the main fun of a mystery.
How’s the art? It’s great. Ediano Silva’s pencils/inks are detailed with excellent figure work and action. Townsend’s colors are fantastic, and the book is visually appealing as a whole.

What’s SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE – FATAL EXAMS #4 About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Check out our SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE – FATAL EXAMS #3 review to find out how Bob got attacked for what he knew (or didn’t know).
We begin with “Rachel” and the Cardwell lawyers showing up at the police station to demand the Gardener, Don Felipe, be released. While she keeps the police occupied, Sheena’s animals sneak in to help Don Felipe escape.
Later, Sheena visits her Cardwell allies, and they figure out the soil samples have nothing of value, but they can triangulate where Caballero’s men came from by triangulating the location of the core samples. Sheena and her allies head to what should be an abandoned communications station, where armed mercenaries are waiting.
We conclude the issue with man-eating hippos, an invitation to horse-riding lessons, and zombies.

Final Thoughts

SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE – FATAL EXAMS #4 gives you plenty of plot development and great art for the cover price. That said, there’s too much happening that doesn’t solve the mystery behind the villain’s plan or what Sheena needs to do to stop it.
