Is It Good?
The more this series progresses, the more it feels like a creative mix between The Land That Time Forgot (pub. 1918) and Indiana Jones. In short, SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #8 is exactly the shot in the arm this title needs by homaging the classic pulp stories of the past in a seamlessly modern context.
The bright spot of the issue is de Souza’s plot as Sheena and her pals try to figure out the truth behind the primitive village and the long-marooned castaways while a volcano erupts and a dinosaur stampede is on its way. Oh, my! That’s a lot of stuff to parse through, but de Souza keep manages the pacing and scene transitions expertly. You never get the feeling events are happening at random, and every outcome works to further the main plot.
The art ranges from good to above average, depending on the page. The action is fast-paced, the character designs are memorable, and the overall flow of an eventful issue is smooth.
However, there are two artists on this issue and the transitions from one artist to the other are jarringly obvious. Also, the colors are heavily saturated with orange on several pages. In short, the art is a mixed bag.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Find out how Sheena wound up between a rock and a hot place in our SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #7 review.
We begin with Sheena and her animal friends assessing an impossible situation. The volcano is spewing rivers of lava headed straight for the village, and a dinosaur stampede is heading in the same direction. Sheena figures out the best solution is to divert the stampede and stop the lava at the same time with a well-placed avalanche.
Meanwhile, Sheena’s friends and Visser work on repairing the plane to escape the island. Little hints are dropped that not every part of Visser’s story is accurate, and we soon learn why.
Later, the villages surround Sheena after her rescue. They don’t know if they can trust her as a stranger, so they bring her before the village’s truth-teller. Sheena learns she and the village share a common lineage.
We conclude the issue with cannibals, revolts, and dangerous misunderstandings.

SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #8 is an eventful and action-packed issue with plenty of plot movement and developments. De Souza’s pacing, dialog, and plotting are all on-point, and the tone captures the glory of classic pulp adventures. That said, the art is inconsistent with rough spots in linework and coloring.
