Was It Good?

SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #7 continues to steer the series in a pulp-y direction by plopping Sheena and her friends on a mysterious island with no quick way home and a strong hint that the people and animals they’ll encounter are not of the average jungle variety. If you’re a fan of Sheena and the works of classic pulp authors such as Edgar Rice Burroughs and Jules Verne, there’s a lot to like in this issue.

The highlight of issue #7 is the unraveling mystery surrounding the island and its inhabitants. Given how Sheena arrived on the island, you won’t need long to figure out the gang isn’t in Kansas anymore. De Souza drops little hints from strangers they encounter that the laws of physics that brought them to the island are subject to change and wild, strange dangers are waiting around every turn. Pulp fans will enjoy seeing how far de Souza integrates Sheena’s current dilemma into exotic pulp situations.

If it sounds like we’re playing coy with the description, it’s because we are. There are a few key plot points that will ruin the surprise, but if you want a more detailed description, keep reading through to the next section.

De Souza drops readers right into the action without too much lazing about or expositional conversations. The pacing is excellent, dialog suffers from a little millennial Twitter-speak but it’s generally good, and the action is well done.

Morales’s art style is a good match for the material. The character anatomy designs are light on details, but Morales concentrates on creating expressive faces where it counts most. Likewise, Ribeiro’s coloring is excellent.

To refresh your timey wimey memory of how Sheena wound up on this mysterious island, first read our SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #6 review.

We begin with Sheena, Ransome, and Bob waking up inside their plane after getting sucked through a portal in Piatiti. The crescent-shaped island is completely surrounded by an open ocean, and a smoldering volcano towers over all. Sheena senses someone watching them, so she sets out to investigate. Avoiding a poorly tossed spear, Sheena tackles her attacker, a starved and bedraggled old man, and brings him back to the plane.

Ransome and Bob begin working on repairs while Sheena heads out into the island to find out where the old man came from. She soon discovers a small village where other men dressed in rags similar to her attacker are tied up as prisoners in the village center. Sheena’s parrot acts agitated as it warns her of very fast and very large “shellbacks” headed her way.

Meanwhile, the old prisoner wakes up from his fever and explains he was marooned on the island just like Sheena and her friends, but he’s anxious to help to get everyone home in time for the end of the “War.”

We conclude the issue with a rumbling volcano and a rumbling stampede of the Cenozoic variety.
