Was It Good?
Moving into the next arc, SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #6 begins a fun, pulp adventure harkening back to the old serials of early Hollywood with a modern tech twist.
The last arc saw the end of the biodome nature preserve as an ill-advised big game hunting attraction sponsored by Sheena’s uncle. Now, her uncle’s on the run, and Cardwell Industries is on track to getting back to the business of business, including environmentally destructive oil fracking.
De Souza swerves the Sheena character in a different direction from the first arc by establishing a public persona for the main character. She’s portrayed as a drunken party goal who’s content to learn the ways of the civilized world by partying at night and flunking through her expensive boarding school during the day. Secretly, she uses her wits and prowess to sabotage Cardwell’s immoral projects at every turn. This is one of the better BruceWayne/Batman setups, and it’s a great way to keep the character running around, performing leopard-skin heroics without tipping off her financiers about what she’s really up to.
The plot makes sense for the character and her new status quo. As the only serving family member on Cardwell’s board of directors, Sheena keeps an ear to big corporation business dealings that intersect with governments. Her plan to foil Cardwell’s latest project is in line with Sheena’s personal mission to protect the jungle. And the final sci-fi twist keeps things interesting.
I like this setup. I like where the story is going. The sci-fi elements introduced at the very end integrate into the main conflict comparatively better than in the first arc. And Sheena proves her acting is just as accomplished as every one of her other talents, cementing her status as one of the great heroes based on peak accomplishment ala Batman or Tarzan.
The art in this issue ranges from good to very good. The character designs are on point. The settings look detailed and complete, and Esposito’s lettering is always top-notch. That said, the Ribeiro went overboard with orange coloring in this issue, and it leaves a slightly harsh visual.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a debate among the board members of Cardwell Industries. The company requires a member of the Cardwell family server on the board at all times, and the only family member around is Rachel Cardwell aka Sheena. Unfortunately, Sheena is barely able to do anything in a drunken stupor when she stumbles into the board meeting with a monkey on her shoulder. However, she hears enough to know the board intends to place a few bribes to allow an oil fracking operation in a protected jungle.
Later, we find out the drunken party girl image is all an act. She pays off the boarding school headmaster to inform the board she’s present every day while she secretly sabotages every immoral Cardwell project as Sheena. The latest Cardwell project could spell big trouble for the jungle, so she formulates a plan to find an ancient, lost, legendary city in the hopes it will be declared a world heritage site and block any attempts to strip the land for oil. With the help of a down-on-his-luck reporter, Bob, and an unwelcome stowaway Sheena charters a plane to fly over the jungle to scan for the lost city of Piatti using a state-of-the-art scanner Cardwell developed.
We conclude the issue with a discovery on top of discovery and the worst possible outcome for picking a lock.

SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #6 is a great way to kick off the character’s new status quo – by setting her up as a public party girl who fights for justice in secret. The conflict is right in line with Sheena’s brand of hero, the cover story is well-executed, and the sci-fi twist at the end builds plenty of curiosity.
