Was It Good?

SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #4is another action-packed, laser-focused entry in the series with a new layer of danger for Sheena to face alongside her unlikely ally. Is it good? Hell yes, it’s good.

Sometimes the moniker “strong female character” gets a bad wrap because it’s used to describe writers’ creations that are anything but. Sheena represents an actual “strong female character” because Mooney does several things right in this issue.

First, Sheena is athletically capable but she uses her nimbleness and skill with weaponry to defeat her foes. You don’t see her tossing 225 lb. men around like pillows because her superior actions are rightly maximized to fit her frame.

Next, Sheena’s outfit may be cheesecake-ish to the untrained eye, but Morales uses the outfit’s design to allow for the widest range of maneuverability and freedom of movement. Yes, the costume doesn’t shy away from exposing Sheena’s curves but it makes sense for her upbringing and how she moves as a warrior.

Strength is not just about how hard you hit but also how willing you are to keep going after taking a hit. In this issue, Sheena and her ally take a bit of damage. While it’s not serious enough to hobble either one, Mooney shows that the best victory is one that’s hard-fought and earned.

The blurb probably clued you into the plot in this issue (rad through to the next section for details), but we learn the animal preserve has a hunting component where the most dangerous game is the most revered prize. Mooney found an understandable way to shift from the original mystery of the giant cat into a different story but in a way that makes the transition make sense. you can always forgive little foibles in the writing as long as the plot and the character actions make sense, and they certainly do here.

Morales, again, turns in a fine performance on the art with Ribeiro’s colors. The action is dynamic, and the fight scenes are bloody and brutal. Beyond the lines and panel co

To remind yourself how Sheena wound up turning from hunter to hunted in a animal preserve, first read our SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #3 review.

We begin with a flashback to an early time when Sheena encountered a cadre of poachers invading her home territory. When she moves to attack to drive them off, camouflaged hunters emerge from the brush to capture Sheena as the poachers’ true prey.

Now, a secret meeting is held in proximity to the animal preserve. The meeting is held like an auction where the highest bids allow the winner to enter the preserve to hunt not only its rare animals but Sheena and Beatrice as well! When the first round of bids concludes, the hunters launch into the reserve to find their prey.

Meanwhile, Ransome continues to advise Sheena under the pretense that she’s still on a rescue mission. Their chatter becomes contentious as Sheena can hear in Ransome’s voice that something isn’t right. She later learns from Ransome that somebody besides Jeffries is listening to communications and may have a part in what’s going on.

We conclude the issue with hunters finding themselves unprepared for their prey, the auctioneer adding in some incentives prizes, and Cardwell’s role revealed.

Final Thoughts

SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #4 is an exciting, action-packed, and dramatic entry in the series. Mooney pulls off the “strong female character” in the best way, and the art team is firing on all cylinders with pop and energy in every panel.

Score: 9.5/10
