Was It Good?

SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #3is an odd mix, in a good way, of modern art styles with a classic pulp story. The two tones mesh together surprisingly well, and the twist reveal in this issue feels like a revelation straight out of classic serial adventures of the 1940s.

Honestly, there’s almost nothing to complain about in this issue, making it an immediate success. Sheena uses her wits and fighting prowess against a mystical beast. The mystery about what’s going on in the reserve is revealed in such a way as to answer the mystery satisfyingly while immediately shifting the focus of the story into a quest to set things right. The focus shift is so seamless that it’s practically perfect.

The second reveal surrounds the red jaguar. It’s clear from the art that the beast is no ordinary cat, and you’d be right in drawing that conclusion. A magical element is introduced into Sheena’s world, and it’s explained exactly as the pulp serial stories of classic Hollywood. The explanation is also wrapped up in the mysterious goings-on in the reserve, so this issue does a nice job of tying it all together.

Again, it may not seem that modern art styles would pair well with classic pulp stories, but it indeed does. The action is fluid and energetic. The color pop on every page. There’s a magic scene involving the jaguar that looks especially pulpy in all the best way, and this is simply a visually exciting comic from front to back.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

Before you join the hunt, get caught up by reading our SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #2 review.

We begin with Sheena tracking the red, glowing jaguar after the latest attack. She traces it back to its lair and finds the belongings of a member of the tourist group. Something, however, isn’t quite right. The lair looks like it’s lived in by a human.

Sheena finds the identification of Beatrice Toussaint. Suddenly, Beatrice appears and gets the jump on Sheena, and knocks her out. When Sheena comes around, Beatrice challenges Sheena to prove if she’s friend or foe. When Sheena explains she’s there to save her friends and also intends to bring the owners of the reserve to justice for running an illegal hunting facility, Beatrice is enraged and transforms into the red jaguar to ensure that the defilers of this jungle reserved are killed instead of simply brought to justice.

We conclude the issue with a Sheena-versus-Skin-Walker battle for survival.

Final Thoughts

SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE (VOL. 2) #3is an exciting, action-packed adventure in the spirit of classic pulp adventures with monstrous beasts, a conspiracy by a shady organization, and battles for survival in the jungle. The art is excellent, the writing is entertaining, and this is an all-around good time read.
