Analysis of SHADOWMAN: SOUL EATERS #4:
Plot:
Jack and Sandria return to the Liveside and convene with the Abettors about Magpie. Sandria explains the curse is fueled by emotion, so the only course of action is to kill Alyssa or kill the emotion fueling the curse – her love for Jack. Sandria and the Abettors have a spell to do the trick, and Jack accepts the consequences of losing the woman he loves, so the team enters the Deadside to find Magpie and cast the spell that will destroy Alyssa’s love for Jack. The issue ends with a third option, Kaya getting an upgrade from the Book of Shadows, and a very loose tie-in to the Resurgence crossover.
Artwork and Presentation:
By far, Sergio Monjes’s artwork is the weak spot of this issue. Monjes’s loose linework and rough details work well enough in still moments with closeups and faces, but the wide shots depicting whimsical battles on the Deadside are a muddled, muddy mess.

Character Work:
A.J. Ampadu gives Shadowman a quiet strength when he’s faced with a lose-lose decision that will set his life back. Even when a third option presents itself, success is only possible when Shadowman sacrifices himself, with no guarantee of survival.
Pacing:
Ampadu’s pacing is fairly consistent and keeps the plot moving. The script is a solid balance of exposition and action to inform readers about the nature of magic from different perspectives while the conflict moves forward.
Strongest Point(s):
The strong point of Shadowman: Soul Eaters #4 is the reasonably satisfying conclusion. The issue ends with a new status quo for at least one character, possibly more, and a plausible tie-in to Resurgence. To be fair, this miniseries barely qualifies as a Resurgence tie-in, but the points that tie in make sense.
Weakest Point(s):
The weakest point, as noted above, is the art. Ampadu’s script is generally good.
Final Thoughts:

SHADOWMAN: SOUL EATERS #4 brings the miniseries to a reasonable conclusion with a climactic battle in the Deadside to save Alyssa from the Magpie curse. A.J. Ampadu’s script is solid enough, and the tie-in with Resurgence makes sense. That said, the art is the weakest aspect of this finale by far.
