Was It Good?

Yes, it’s a great end to a surprisingly enjoyable first arc.

This issue doesn’t have a title, but if it did, it would be “The Enemy Of My Enemy…” All of the main characters and even the good citizens of Mexico are forced to accept that change and success only come when people stand up and together to get the job done. Every character has a moment to shine beyond our main hero, and it works out (mostly) up to the very end.

We always say the best comics are comics that can make you feel something. Here, we get two action scenes involving Seis Cuerdas’ spectacular sombrero that invoke wonder. The personal moment between Dantes and Lara is positively sweet, charming, romantic, and a little bit funny. And the final battle is tense and exciting. Getting the readers to feel something should be near the top of the list for every comic creator, and this book has that skill down pat.

We’ve loved the art since the first issue, and #3 is no exception. Bold colors, strong, dramatic lines, and a character style that’s practically a love letter to Bronze Age comics. To be fair, some of the color combinations, especially in crowds with lots of clothing to fill in, do clash a bit, but that may be intentional to highlight the poverty in certain areas.

In all, this is a strong end to a memorable series. Source Point would do well to have Seis Cuerdas return for further adventures.

An injured Daniel has Seis Cuerdas in a chokehold as the two fight in Daniel’s private temple to Santa Muerte. Before Daniel can kill his enemy, Marta and Javier bash Daniel in the head and spirit Seis Cuerdas away to recover with Lara’s help.

Meanwhile, El Diablo escapes from prison to avenge Daniel’s betrayal. He wastes no time gathering his men and setting up a safe house in the city to ready his plans.

When Seis Cuerdas recovers, he learns of El Diablo’s escape and decides to find him for help in stopping Daniel and rescuing the kidnapped children. Reluctantly, El Diablo agrees to the plan. Seis Cuerdas, Marta, Javier, Lara, and El Diablo hatch a plan to use the intel from a mole in Daniel’s organization to intercept the children before their sacrifice and stop Daniel once and for all.

How well does that plan work out? That’s a plot point you’ll have to find out for yourself.

Final Thoughts

SEIS CUERDAS: DEFENDER OF MEXICO #3 ends a thoroughly entertaining throwback to Bronze Age comics with excitement, adventure, and pitch-perfect emotional beats that leave you smiling. This series is a keeper.

Score: 9.5/10
