Is It Good?
SEA OF THIEVES: ORIGINS (VOL. 1) collects three comic adaptations based on the hit video game about a mysterious ocean that can only be reached through a deadly fog named the Devil’s Shroud. On the Sea of Thieves, all things are possible, but danger lurks on every island and beneath every wave, and this volume catches the spirit of it all beautifully.
Jeremy Whitley’s tales take the lore of the video game and expand it into rich legends that sit comfortably into any one of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Readers are treated to tales about talking skeletons, powerful witches, deadly pirates, and fantastical creatures. If you’re into pirate fantasy, there’s a little bit of everything here for your reading enjoyment.
That said, the minor down point of the volume is the disjointed references to the aspects of the video game that don’t make sense unless you’ve actually played the video game. Most of the volume reads like a collection of cutscenes that bridge two or more aspects of the game, so if you’ve never played the game, you won’t know who some of the characters are or what they’re talking about. Wisely, Whitely establishes a central character in each of the three tales to carry the narrative through, but several side characters appear out of nowhere and present themselves as somebody “important” when it’s not clear why.
Marcellius and Yuwono deliver a fun, imaginative, and entertaining collection of art. Marcellius’s art style feels like something out of the best Disney channel cartoons, ala The Gummy Bears or Duck Tales. The style fits the source material and the vibe of the stories without presenting them as kiddish or cartoonish. It works well, and the art goes a long way toward establishing the fun, adventurous atmosphere of the story.
