Is SCORCHED #22 Good?
SCORCHED #22 is interesting and confusing at the same time. It’s interesting because an enraged She-Spawn unleashes her full fury on Terminus and the Planet Eaters in a kick-ass action comic. It’s confusing because none of the timing lines up with what’s going on in the other Spawn titles, specifically around the Heaven/Hell war.
When last we left the Scorched, they engaged in a barnburner of a brawl against Terminus and the Planet Eaters, now wielding magical armor. When the battle appeared to be tipping in Terminus’s favor, She-Spawn appeared. Now, the Spawn with a motherly grudge lets loose and puts Terminus in his place. When Spawn asks her to re-assume her role as team leader, She-Spawn rejects the offer in favor of a higher authority.
In this case, the higher authority is Gaia. Readers may find the title is steadily drifting away from whatever center Lewis and McFarlane started with because it’s nearly impossible to tell where the series is headed. The Scorched team is no longer the only team. She-Spawn is off on her own crusade, and there’s not a single mention of the Heaven/Hell war.
What’s great about SCORCHED #22? This issue is (almost) wall-to-wall action, so if you want to see Terminus get a well-deserved butt-whooping for all the trouble he’s caused, this is it. The amount and variety of Spawn-ish action is copious.
What’s not so great about SCORCHED #22? Terminus is unquestionably beaten, so what is this title’s purpose? If the goal was to stop the Planet Eaters, the mission is over. If the goal was to develop the team to play a factor in the raging Heaven/Hell war, the conflict hasn’t come up for several issues. If this title has a direction or a connection to the other Spawn titles, it’s too hidden to see, which almost makes this title pointless.
How’s the art? Stephen Segovia’s art style is a fantastic fit for the battle action on display, but it’s Arreola’s colors where this issue shines. The battle is powerful yet graceful, and the pages crackle with power.

What’s SCORCHED #22 About?

Check out our SCORCHED #21 review to find out how Terminus geared up for the big fight.
We begin with Jessica Priest, aka She-Spawn, making a grand entrance onto the battlefield where Socrched and Terminus are duking it out. She-Spawn orders Scorched to fall back so she can handle Terminus personally.
The battle is vicious but brief. She-Spawn puts down Terminus permanently and sends the Planet Eaters packing. When the fight is over, Spawn asks She-Spawn to come back to lead Scorched. She refuses and unveils her new team as they make their way into a Dead Zone to reach their next destination.
We conclude the issue with sinking sand, a correction, and a disappearance.

Final Thoughts

SCORCHED #22 elevates She-Spawn as an unstoppable badass who’s more than able to put Terminus in his place. The art and action are first-rate, but the series seems to have lost its direction and purpose.
