Is It Good?

SCORCHED #19 is a solid entry in the series that moves the players in position for the grand conflict to come, creates motivation for Spawn and his colleagues, and unveils a gruesome new weapon in Senator Terminus’s arsenal. Technically, SCORCHED #19 qualifies as a setup issue, but it’s executed well enough to get you excited for bigger things.

When last we left Scorched, Spawn returned to a less-than-welcoming reception, and She-Spawn was buried after a brutal death. Now, Spawn sets out for bloody vengeance after learning of She-Spawn’s death, and Senator Terminus uses the blood of his victims to create a Deviant soldier in preparation for Earth’s judgment.

Again, SCORCHED #19 is a setup issue, but it’s a good one. Sean Lewis and Todd McFarlane deliver dramatic, tension-filled scenes on every page. Spawn amps up the emotional beats when he sets out to avenge She-Spawn’s death through brutal action that impresses even Monolith. And Senator Terminus’s escalating actions create a ticking clock of momentum that gets you to urge the Scorched to hurry up before it’s too late. Anticipation, when done right, can make for powerful storytelling, and you get plenty of it here.

What’s not so great? Oy! Spelling and grammar. Usually, we don’t call out spelling and grammar because it’s a nitpick, but when you keep tripping over spelling and grammatical errors on every other page, it’s time to call it out. Grammarly is free, folks.

How’s the art? It’s excellent, as you would expect from any Spawn-related comic. Readers of this site are more familiar with Stephen Segovia’s Dynamite covers, but his interiors are rock-solid. Segovia’s line work and anatomy are respectable, and Arreola’s colors look great. But as a minor down point, Segovia loses detail on the wide shots, enough to be noticeable.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

We begin with Senator Terminus (actually, a planet-eater in human form) killing a group of human followers who made the mistake of failing him. When the Senator’s aides arrive to call him on stage, they stay behind to clean up the mess. Strangely, the spilled blood appears to be taking on a new form.

Elsewhere, Medieval gives Spawn the bad news that She-Spawn is dead. Enraged by the news, Spawn sets out to kill everyone responsible for her death.

We conclude the issue with a bloody new ally, a global order to prepare, and a fate worse than death.

SCORCHED #19 works exceedingly well as a setup issue to move Spawn and Scorched into position while Senator Terminus makes his new soldiers ready for Earth’s judgment. The emotional drama and tension are sky-high, and the art is excellent.
