Is SCARLETT COUTURE: THE MUNICH FILE #2 Good?
Now we’re cooking with Chanel No. 5. SCARLETT COUTURE: THE MUNICH FILE #2 mixes intrigue, spycraft, action, and a little bit of heat for the strongest entry in the series’s return so far. If you’ve been on the fence about this series, this issue might just change your mind.
When last we left Scarlett and her partners in crime, the two allies best suited to decrypt the plans concerning Project Stardust were ambushed, leaving one dead and sending Scarlett on the run. Now, Scarlett and her allies head to London to look up an old boyfriend with the resources to decrypt the file, but he may not be too happy to see Scarlett after the way their relationship ended.
“Ended” may not be the right word because the boyfriend, Alex, got nicked during a federal crime operation, which puts him on a short leash. Scarlett may not be a good girlfriend, but she knows how to use leverage when it counts.
What’s great about SCARLETT COUTURE: THE MUNICH FILE #2? Des Taylor kicks up the pace and plot development to give you an energetic, tension-filled issue. Scarlett globe hops to discover the secret of the encrypted files, and once she does, everyone is out to get her. The discovery also sets a ticking clock for Scarlett to unmask the masterminds behind Stardust, which adds an extra layer of energy.
What’s not so great about SCARLETT COUTURE: THE MUNICH FILE #2? Energetic pacing is a good thing, but adding new characters during a fast-paced comic gets overwhelming with an already character-heavy series. Des keeps the narrative fairly linear, but keeping track of who’s who with so many groups, organizations, companies, and now underground crime syndicates is becoming cumbersome.
How’s the art? It’s fine for what it is. By design, Des Taylor employs an animation cell-type appearance to the panels, so it reads like you’re reading the comic version of an animated show. The lines are clean, but an animation aesthetic diminishes any grittiness you’d expect in a story of this type. In other words, the art is very good, but not what you would expect for a crime noir story.

Check out our SCARLETT COUTURE: THE MUNICH FILE #1 review to find out what happened after Scarlett got her hands on the SD card.
We begin with several espionage centers frantically tapping all forms of communication to find Scarlett. A flight booking tips off the observers that Scarlett is headed to London. En route, Scarlett informs her friends that she’s going to see an ex-boyfriend who stays off the grid because he might be the next best hope of encrypting the files.
Scarlett wears a very small dress to see Alex, her ex-boyfriend, but she has to get through Alex’s partner first because their “breakup” destroyed a lot of business and reputation. Alex privately agrees to decrypt the files for a hefty sum of cash and a kiss. When the task is complete, Scarlett is shocked to find Project Stardust and related activities are all financially backed by KlassBank.
We conclude the issue with a chase in heels, a deadly firefight, and a drafted ally on the mission.
