Is It Good?

Well, SAMURAI SONJA #3 is a good issue for reinforcing that Samurai Sonja is an excellent fighter. However, that’s it. There’s no story. No dialog except for a bit of narration. No character development. No exposition. Samurai Sonja walks up to a bridge occupied by a very large blue ogre, and then they fight.

The end.

This review might have been different if some critical piece of information had been revealed about Shuten Dōji, if Sonja was forced to retreat and find a new path, or if a supporting character had come along to aid Sonja in her quest. As it is, Sonja enters the bridge and fights the ogre.

The end.

Therefore, the success or failure of the issue lies solely in Puglia’s art. In large part, the art is a success. There are a few panels where the choreography doesn’t quite make sense transitioning from one panel to the next, and there are at least two spots where Sonja receives a lethal blow that she somehow shrugs off, but on the whole, the art looks good.

Final Thoughts

SAMURAI SONJA #3 is an odd entry in the series because there is no story, exposition, or character growth. Sonja enters a bridge and fights the ogre. It’s unclear if this issue legitimately qualifies as a comic, but if you want to see some darn fine sword-fighting skills, this one has it all.

Score: 6.5/10
