Is SAM AND TWITCH CASE FILES #2 Good?

In the last issue of “Sam and Twitch Case Files,” tensions between Sam and Twitch flared, leading to Twitch leaving town temporarily to assist a friend with a murder case. Sam leaned heavily on a confidential informant, resulting in both of them facing suspension for misconduct. Twitch, attempting to defend his friend, found himself in hot water as well. The issue ended with Twitch receiving a call about a murder case involving a pile of body parts.

In Sam and Twitch Case Files #2, the story unfolds in two parallel timelines. Firstly, we see Sam attempting to make amends with Twitch, bringing a peace offering of flowers and wine. However, Twitch’s wife, Helen, intervenes, expressing her frustration with Sam’s behavior, emphasizing the impact it has on their family. Later, Twitch arrives in Plainfield, Indiana, where the murders occurred. He reconnects with an old police academy friend, Detective Jim Tressel, who welcomes him warmly and offers assistance with the investigation. Twitch is treated exceptionally well, but there’s an underlying sense of unease and suspicion.

What did we like about SAM AND TWITCH CASE FILES #2?

McFarlane and Groff excel in building tension and atmosphere. The slow pacing effectively creates a sense of paranoia and mistrust, especially within the town of Plainfield. The narrative subtly hints at something more sinister beneath the surface, adding depth to the story.

What didn’t we like about SAM AND TWITCH CASE FILES #2?

The story progresses at a sluggish pace, with too much time spent on conversations that don’t significantly impact the main plot. While world-building is important, the plot needs to advance at a more engaging pace to maintain reader interest. Additionally, the shift in art style, while not inherently bad, may alienate readers expecting the typical Spawn universe aesthetic.

How’s the Art?

Szymon Kudranski’s art, while different from the typical Spawn style, effectively conveys the grounded, realistic tone of the story. However, it lacks the distinctiveness associated with the Spawn universe, potentially misleading readers about the comic’s connection to the franchise.
