Was It Good?
SALTY SEDUCTIONS OF THE SALATIOUS SEAS is, in a word, charming. Doud and Pinder put together a light, supernatural mystery filled with likable heroes, a curmudgeonly villain, monsters, romance, and intrigue.
The plot revolves around a spunky reporter, Henrietta Tilney, and her would-be beau, Lord Harwood, heading to a small fishing village to investigate a series of disappearances. The plot is well-paced, the playful dialog gives you all the attitude and personality of each character you’ll ever need to understand who they are, and the mystery is solidly constructed. Once the heart of the disappearances is uncovered, Miss Tilney concocts a plant that would make the Scooby Gang proud.
If you’re interested in the tone and vibe of this story, it’s a safe mystery. For some reason, we get a Murder, She Wrote type of vibe. There’s a little bit of action, a little bit of violence, and a little bit of the supernatural, but nothing too hard-hitting to upset sensitive readers.
Pinder’s art keeps the light moments light and the grim, violent moments family-friendly. The characters are immediately likable via their upbeat costume designs and friendly faces. Every bit of this comic is visually pleasant – from the rustic sea village to the eclectic side characters.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with an introduction to Henrietta Tilney and Lord Harwood as they take a carriage ride to the remote town of Polperro to investigate a series of disappearances. Miss Tilney is focused on uncovering the heart of the mystery for her story while Lord Harwood is focused on being her protective escort and possibly writing a crowd-pleasing work of fiction based on what they find.
Polperro is a sleepy fishing village beset by strange occurrences, but nobody is willing to talk to the investigators. Miss Tilney spots a strangely mesmerizing dress in a shop window and inquires inside about its cost and where it came from. The shopkeeper explains the dress is meant to attract customers and that he’d never part with it at any price.
That evening, Miss Tilney spots a woman pining for the same dress with a look of desperation and sadness. Acting on a hunch, Miss Tilney follows the woman home where she overhears the master of the house beating her for staying out late to look at the dress. The master is not the young woman’s husband, but he has a hold over her that she can’t escape.
We conclude the issue with confirmation of a legend, a monster in disguise, and a deep well.
