Unfortunately, Priest has reverted back to old, bad habits of constructing a narrative that jumps around and doesn’t stay focused. The story jumps back and forth through time with each character, sometimes the same character in different timeframes and locations, making it nearly impossible to keep track of which Vampirella you’re reading about in the story. Is it the Vampirella from now or the Vampirella from two hours ago?

It’s very confusing which replaces most of the enjoyment of reading this good-looking issue with frustration and annoyance.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

We pick up with Nyx driving around 16th-century Liechtenstein in a Prius holding a baby and an M-16. No, it doesn’t make a lot of sense, so read our SACRED SIX #8 review for some clarity.

Nyx is searching for the Landsnechte to get her golden hellfire scepter back. She leaves the baby (not hers) with a shepherd, but before she gets too far, the shepherd is decapitated and all his cattle turn into demonic creatures.

Cut to recently (just before now?), Adam the Gardener is leaving the gates of Sacred. We also see that there are whole groups of people that are exact duplicates of the Gardener in Sacred, and they presumably take turns/shifts with their duties. Are they clones? Do they all have the same duties? Who knows.

Cut to Vampirella waking up in the morgue after Pantha “killed” her. The “new” Draculina is in the morgue waiting for Vampirella to wake up. She arrived using a portal generated by the ring Lilith gave her. Vampirella tries to stand and walk but her body hasn’t healed completely, and she collapses.

Cut to the late police chief’s home after the fire that burned down the Ashthorne city hall in the prior issue. OG Draculina-in-a-kid’s-body wakes up on a couch and told by her talking rat familiar what happened after the fire.

Adam the Gardener and Leviticus know each other, and not in a friendly way. Leviticus assumes Adam has gone rogue and leaves to inform the Sacred council. Nyx flew away in fire demon form after finally retrieving her scepter, and Malik is missing.

Cut to Nyx flying straight up into Earth’s orbit when her flame powers cut out (“there’s no air in outer space”). There’s no clue given as to where Nyx was going or how she thought she was going to get there. She falls to Earth but manages to activate her flame powers at the last minute to avoid going SPLAT!

Cut back to the Ashthorne city hall after the fire and Jordan is still searching for Malik. Out of nowhere, Zylaven appears and offers to turn Jordan into a vampire to avenge Malik’s death. It’s not at all clear where Zylaven came from, how he knows Jodan or Malik, or why he would offer to turn Jordan?

Cut to a portal when new Draculina steps through to confront OG-Draculina-in-a-kids-body, Chastity, Samira, and Drago. They’re all looking for Vampirella when new Draculina tells them she took Vampirella to the hospital in Sacred where she’s recovering from the Pantha attack. They prepare to leave as a group when Samira asks them all to stay and fight. It’s not clear why they would stay to fight the forces of Sacred when they’re intending to go to Sacred???

We conclude the issue with a visit to a Sacred hospital room.

How Does It End?

Lucy Fuhr arrives with some tools. Vampirella has somebody watching over her, and it’s not new Draculina. “Vampirella Is My Only Hope…”

Final Thoughts

SACRED SIX #9, available from Dynamite Comics on May 19th, 2021, is filled with great art and a lot of things happen, but the story is a chaotic, disorganized chore to get through.

Score: 6.5/10
